In this, the season of giving, the University of North Texas at Dallas women's basketball team overdid it Thursday (Dec. 16) night enroute to losing a non-conference battle with visiting Friends University, 88-67.
It was one of those evenings when the Trailblazers offense lacked spark and the defense was riddled by the Kansas-based Falcons who were on a two-game visit to Texas. And, if their Saturday opponent, Southwestern Assemblies of God, had scouts on hand, they learned they will have to keep the powerful Friends attack out of the paint. Against UNTD, it scored layup after layup, building a margin that grew to as much as 28 points in the fourth quarter. By game's end, 52 of the winners' points had been scored down the lane.
The outcome was pretty well settled early.
The Trailblazers did manage to keep pace with the visitors in the first period, thanks to a series of four three-pointers from guard Caitlyn Cron, who led the UNTD scoring with 18 points. Teammate Zyunn Cormier added 15. But, factor in a dozen turnovers, a 35.9 percent shooting average, and the fact Friends dominated the rebounding (46-34), and it was easy determining the better team on this night.
Carrie Lacy, a Victoria, Tex. native, paced the Friends scorers with 19 points while fellow Texans Taylor Jackson, Houston, and Jailen Johnson, Grand Prairie, contributed 11 each.
The Trailblazers now break for the holidays, returning to action Jan.1 when they visit Southwestern Christian in a return to Sooner Athletic Conference competition.
