UNTD Men's Basketball Falls Late at John Brown in Back-and-Forth Saturday Contest

SILOAM SPRINGS, Ark. – University of North Texas at Dallas men's basketball dropped an 82-74 final on the road against John Brown at Bill George Arena on Saturday. It was a competitive game wire-to-wire as neither side led by double figures and the game featured nine lead changes to go with six ties.

The Trailblazers acted resilient throughout the second half, erasing a four-point halftime lead to gain small advantages. After sides kept trading little leads, John Brown used a 12-3 run to match its greatest lead of the game by eight (66-58). The Trailblazers answered with seven straight. Eventually down a few points again, a corner three by Daniel Sohn (Aledo, Texas) knotted the game at 72 with just over two minutes remaining and capped another 7-0 outburst. The rally stalled as the Golden Eagles retook the lead and put the game away with 10 of the final 12 points, which included going a perfect 8-for-8 at the free throw line.

Juniors Daniel Sohn (Aledo, Texas) and Greg Crawford (Houston, Texas) matched a game-high 19 points each, with the tandem scoring 28 of the team's 39 second half points and final 16 points for the Trailblazers in the outing.

UNT Dallas dropped to 7-9 overall and 4-9 in Sooner Athletic Conference play, while John Brown improved to 10-6 and 8-4.

The first six minutes saw the Trailblazers get off to a much better start compared to the other night on the road trip in Missouri. They grabbed an 11-4 lead as seniors Vernon Johnson (DeSoto, Texas) and Jayden Johnson-Blair (Dallas, Texas) capped the stretch with the final two baskets. Johnson had a steal and teammate Demaryon Thornton (Chicago, Ill.) found Johnson-Blair on the fastbreak as the veteran group linked up together on a great sequence to open the contest. Junior Sergio McClain (Peoria, Ill.) added four points early in the run too.

John Brown began to answer with two points and eventually had consecutive treys shrink the margin to a point (15-14) with eight minutes in. The seven-point spread for UNTD was its largest of the game and matched twice. After the score had reached a point, McClain nailed a trifecta of his own and both teams hit a two-minute drought that ended on a jumper by Sohn with eight and a half to play before break. Sohn had the next two UNTD baskets to maintain a six-point lead, but a three-point play for the Golden Eagles cut the gap in a half. It was a tussle for control over the next several minutes, and a go-ahead jumper by JBU's Jack Ullom and three by Elijah Lawrence made it a 28-24 lead with 4:46 left. The Golden Eagles led the rest of the stanza, going up by as many as five. The Trailblazers fought to remain within as much as a point twice, including two free throws in the last 22 seconds by Sohn. A triple by JBU at the buzzer made it a 39-35 halftime lead for the hosts.

UNT Dallas reduced the margin less than two minutes into the second half with seven of the next nine points. Sohn had an old fashioned three-point play put the Trailblazers in front 42-41. Each side made gains to grab small leads throughout the second half, highlighted on the UNTD side with Thornton scoring a go-ahead jumper to make it 46-45 and then drilling a fastbreak three-pointer with around 16 to play after a Crawford steal and assist.

A 12-3 run for the Golden Eagles just beyond the midway point of the second half was the game-changing scoring span that had UNTD trying to overcome for the lead afterwards. Down eight to match the greatest deficit (66-58) of the contest, the Trailblazers answered immediately with seven straight points of their own. This included five points by Crawford and Sohn grabbed a steal and was fouled to go make both free throws and cut the gap to a point (66-65) with about six minutes remaining. The next six points over two minutes extended the JBU margin to seven, but the Crawford and Sohn dynamic evaporated the margin to even the score at 72 with 2:08 remaining. Seemly having to battle on every possession, UNTD got a huge block by Johnson and Crawford started the new possession with Johnson-Blair finding Sohn in front of his team's bench on the far-left corner for the tying trey.

Momentum changed back for John Brown as a well contested jumper fell to give the team the lead. The Trailblazers did not answer, but did play good defense to force a stop just under a minute in regulation. However, they did not get the defensive rebound and eventually had to foul, where John Brown shined at the line. Sohn made an inside shot with 19 ticks left on the clock to keep the game a two-point score (76-74). Free throws made it a four-point game and with 15 seconds left the Trailblazers were called for a five-second violation and had to foul again to allow the game to be put away.

Crawford had 17 second half points from the bench after being limited to two minutes in the opening half with foul trouble. Sohn registered his fifth game in double figures out of six and fourth straight. The five steals were a career-high in a game and led the squad. Finally, he matched Johnson and Johnson-Blair with a team-leading six boards to complete his big road swing. Thornton was the other UNTD player in double figures, as he eclipsed the plateau the first time this season with 11 points in his third game back this week.

The Trailblazers had their best performance at the charity stripe, making a season-high 27 free throws and tying a season-high 29 attempts. The mark as a team was one shy in a game from Dallas Christian on October 28, 2023. Crawford was 11-for-11, while Sohn shot 8-for-9.

UNT Dallas led in points off turnovers (17-13) points in the paint (53-42), and fastbreak points (5-2).

The Golden Eagles shot 49.1 percent from the field and made seven three-pointers. They went 23-for-28 at the foul line, as there were 42 combined fouls called.

A quartet led JBU in scoring with Trae Oetting and Elijah Lawrence with 17 each and Drew Miller and Jack Ullom with 12 apiece.

UNT Dallas returns to Ellis Davis Field House for one game this week before heading out for four-straight away games. The team hosts Mid-America Christian on January 16 with an 8:00 p.m. tip-off after the women's game.
