Cold Stretch haunts Trailblazers in Season Opener

FARMERS BRANCH, Texas – University of North Texas at Dallas men's basketball dropped its season opener at Dallas Christian College on Thursday. The Trailblazers clawed back from a first half deficit to eventually go up by as many as 14 points in the second half.

However, around the midway juncture of the stanza, the home Crusaders got hot and started to attack the margin into single digits with nine straight points. UNT Dallas stalled the run with a three-point play by Demaryon Thornton (Chicago, Ill.) to make the score 64-58 and 6:46 remaining.

The turning point of the contest came with DCC rattling 15 points without an answer from the Trailblazers. This stretch ranged from 6:27 until 2:50 and saw a 73-64 Dallas Christian lead. A triple by Jason Ezeadiuguwu flipped the score at 5:21 and then a layup by Seth Mays and steal and dunk by Carlas Canady gave the home crowd momentum to finish this out on what would be a 24-10 run the final 10 minutes.

DaRyan Williams (Austin, Texas) made a layup to end the scoring streak by the opponent and narrow the margin to seven. Other than a Greg Crawford (Houston, Texas) layup a minute later, this was going to be the Crusaders game to take as they edged UNTD for the first time in four meetings.

Both sides held small leads throughout the first half of the game. With neither side ahead by more than five points, it was DCC that appeared to be pushing the momentum by breaking out to a 33-24 lead and two and a half minutes before intermission.

With 1:25 to go, Crawford converted on an old fashioned three-point play and then a steal by Williams eventually led to Crawford getting a layup to cap a streak of nine straight UNTD points by team's returning all-conference player. A steal with 30 seconds to play by Julius Morris (Houston, Texas) helped get a possession that resulted in a Williams jumper to nip the score at 34-33. Two free throws by DCC resulted in a 36-33 halftime. The Trailblazers seemed to be capturing the grit to battle back from a season ago. Besides that late first half comeback and little spurt in the second to hold onto 14 points on a few occasions, it was a sluggish start to the season that saw a 2-0 Crusaders squad fight to spoil opening night for UNT Dallas.

Crawford led the way with 26 points, including 19 in the first half. He went 16-for-21 at the free throw line and was also 5-of-7 from the field. He nearly opened the year with another double-double after posting 18 last season. He notched nine boards and had five on the offensive side. Williams was the other UNTD player to eclipse double figures in scoring with 14 points. JT Curry (Baton Rouge, La.) and Sedric Curry Jr. (Baton Rouge, La.) made a brotherly debut by matching each other with eight points and seven rebounds. Curry also had a pair of blocks and steals.

UNT Dallas shot 37.9 percent (25-66) from the field and were 0-of-13 from long range. The team went 19-for-28 at the free throw line. The Trailblazers outdid Dallas Christian, 45-40, on the boards. Most categories were nearly even, with the only noticeable difference being a 50-42 advantage toward the Crusaders on points in the paint.

DCC made more shots with a 45.5 percent (30-66) display on the floor and 4 three-pointers. The team was 15-for-26 at the line.

The Crusaders were led by Canady with 18 points, seven rebounds, three assists, and three steals. Nick Lancit tossed 17 points down thanks to shooting 80 percent (8-10).

UNT Dallas has a quick turnaround with its homecoming game on Saturday at Ellis Davis Field House. Tip-off is at 4:00 p.m. After that game will be an exhibition on November 3 at UT Arlington.
