Trailblazers Silent at end of Non-League Action

DALLAS – University of North Texas at Dallas men's basketball fell 60-53 against Paul Quinn on Monday night in a rescheduled contest from last week. The Trailblazers (1-3) slumped shooting 32.2 percent for the night and allowed too many big runs for Paul Quinn (2-4) to control the momentum overall to a non-conference triumph.

The contest began with the Tigers surging with six straight points, but a three by JT Curry (Baton Rouge, La.) and later a three by Demaryon Thornton (Chicago, Ill.) lifted UNTD up 8-6 through four and a half minutes to start the game. Each side traded the lead four times, all in the first stanza. After Paul Quinn went up 14-10, the Trailblazers countered with five unanswered points including a go-ahead triple by Julius Morris (Houston, Texas). Two minutes later, a basket by Keylyn Sanders (Paris, Texas) provided the final lead of the night for UNT Dallas at 20-19. The Tigers closed the last 6:07 minutes on a 14-6 run. The Trailblazers did scratch back after down 11 (33-22) with 1:36 before intermission on four points by Greg Crawford (Houston, Texas).

Paul Quinn started four and a half minutes into the second half with a lead back up to 10, and the Trailblazers put together their greatest outburst of the game. DaRyan Williams (Austin, Texas) started a 10-0 run with a pair of free throws. Trifectas by Sanders and Thornton collapsed the gap, and Sanders swiped a steal that led to an eventual Thornton layup to knot the score at 40 with 13:56 remaining.

The Tigers closed the game on a 20-13 scoring swing that saw them never trail and scored the next four points. Both teams traded baskets most of the way with little spurts giving the Tigers a multiple possession advantage. A jumper by Sanders with under five minutes made it a 52-47 score, and Thornton had a swift move to the basket for a layup with 2:48, but otherwise the Trailblazers were unable to threaten any further.

Thornton and Sanders were the leading scorers for UNT Dallas with 15 and 12 points, respectively. It was a season-high for Thornton, as he went 6-for-12 overall and 2-for-4 from three. He had four rebounds. Sanders notched a personal-high off the bench in his second game.

Crawford was limited to seven points but grabbed a game-high nine rebounds. Crawford did surpass 400 career points with the Trailblazers in 32 games with this being early into his second season. The guard/forward entered tonight ranked second in the Red River Athletic Conference and 15th in NAIA for scoring average.

The Trailblazers went 5-of-23 from long range and 10-for-19 at the free throw line. They outrebounded Paul Quinn 41-34 and produced eight blocks as a team, led by Sedric Curry Jr. (Baton Rouge, La.) with three. UNTD matched the team record for blocks in a game, which was last done on January 30, 2025, against Wayland Baptist.

The Tigers held a 32-22 edge on points in the paint and 11-8 edge on fastbreak points. They won the turnover battle, 15-12. Isaiah McCallum led all players with 21 points and tied a trio on the opposition with six rebounds. Rashad Ballard delivered a solid all-around performance with 11 points, six boards, eight assists, and four steals.

UNT Dallas looks to put behind its sluggish non-conference start and focus on its first Red River Athletic Conference
matchup Saturday, November 22. The Trailblazers host University of the Southwest with tip-off at 3 p.m.
