UNTD Men's Basketball battles No. 25 LSUS

SHREVEPORT, La. – University of North Texas at Dallas men's basketball could not contain No. 25 LSU-Shreveport on Saturday afternoon, as the Pilots ran away with a 103-71 victory. The Trailblazers competed early, leading by as many as four points through the first five minutes of action. LSUS showed its lethal offense around the midway juncture and stretched the margin to double-digits. After UNT Dallas battled back to within six with 3:18 minutes left in the first (38-32), the nationally ranked Pilots went on a 15-2 run to close with a 53-34 advantage and control the game from there on.

UNT Dallas closes the rough road week with a 3-8 record and 2-5 conference mark. LSU-Shreveport improves to 10-3 and 7-0 in conference play with its seventh straight victory.

Greg Crawford (Houston, Texas) led the Trailblazers with 16 points and eight rebounds. Most of Crawfords damage was at the free throw line with a 11-for-12. He has reached double figures in 38 of the team's 39 games and now has exactly 200 points on this campaign. He has totaled 693 points in his UNTD career.

Demaryon Thornton (Chicago, Ill.) matched a team-high 16 points, as he made a trio of three-pointers to mark his career-high and reflected on his highest scoring total to date.

DaRyan Williams (Austin, Texas) completed the trio of double-digit scoring with 14 points, as this marked his best road showing with back-to-back double-digit scoring performances.

The Trailblazers made their highest number of three-pointers on the season with 8 and had a bounce-back game at the free throw line with 19-for-22 shooting. They shot 37.3 percent from the field (22-59) but were unable to slow down the scorching LSUS offense.

LSU-Shreveport posted a blistering 69 percent (20-29) in the opening half and stayed north of 50 percent for the game, concluding with a 60.3-clip (41-68). It was powered by 10-of-18 (55.6 percent) from three, which featured 6-of-8 in the opening frame. The Pilots scored above 50 points in each half.

Eight different players scored double-digits for the Pilots, led by James Johnson with 18. The points were spread out with the next highest scorer being Emareyon McDonald with 14 points, and then two players having 12, one with 11, and a trio with 10. Khi Wallace stood out with a double-double 12 points and 11 boards.

LSUS held a 23-19 edge on points off turnovers, 15-10 edge on second chance points, and 20-8 edge on points in the paint.

The Trailblazers came out ready to give the Pilots all they could handle, as Thornton drilled an opening triple. After LSUS countered with a trey, Crawford swished a rare trifecta to double the lead. It went back-and-forth with a few lead changes over the first five minutes. Field goals by Williams with a Thornton shot sandwiched between put UNTD up 14-10 with 14:37 left.

LSUS scored seven straight points over the next minute to go up by five (19-14). A three by McDonald started a string of three three-pointers by the home team to power a 10-point lead (26-16) with just above the midway juncture.

UNT Dallas had one last resilient run with a trey by Thornton to cut the deficit to single digits with five and a half minutes left in the first. Two minutes later, Williams scored on a jumper and completed an old fashioned three-point play down 38-32 with 3:18 left. A jumper by JT Curry (Baton Rouge, La.) kept the margin under double-digits a final time with 2:06 left, but the Pilots ran away into the half with all the momentum on a major run.

Williams nailed a trey a minute into the second half to pull the game within 16 points, but the hot-shooting Pilots kept the pressure going throughout the remainder of the game and cruised into the break extending their winning streak and strong home play of 6-1.

The 103 points allowed matched an all-time amount for the Trailblazers men's basketball team. They also surrendered that amount to Central Christian College on February 1, 2024, with a 103-98 overtime result. These games are the only ones UNT Dallas has allowed the opponent to break triple-digits.

UNT Dallas will look to regroup after the holiday break. The Trailblazers open the 2026 calendar year with their third road game in a row at University of the Southwest on January 3. Tip-off will be at 3:00 p.m.
