Game Recap: Men's Basketball | | nathanyacovissi

Trailblazers unable to slow down Saints on Saturday

SAN ANTONIO, Texas – It was a difficult afternoon for University of North Texas at Dallas men's basketball, as a high-scoring Our Lady of the Lake offense averaged above 50 points per 20 minutes and grabbed a 108-78 victory on Saturday.

DaRyan Williams (Austin, Texas) scored UNTD's first five points and gave the team its largest lead of the game at 5-1. That was as large as the margin reached and less than three minutes UNTD would see the narrow gap evaporate to 6-6. Our Lady of the Lake capped a 9-1 scoring span on a layup by Devontae Da Costa with just under five minutes gone by. Greg Crawford (Houston, Texas) split at the free throw line and Dante Curry-El (Charlottesville, Va.) layup brought the score to 10-9 through five and a half minutes.

After a few points got exchanged, Crawford nipped the score to a pair (17-15) through eight minutes, and then a few possessions later, Brooks Anderson (Waco, Texas) drained a triple to make it 20-18.

Our Lady of the Lake ambushed the scoreboard with a trey in response and 10 unanswered points that stretched its lead to 12 points (30-18). Sedric Curry Jr. (Baton Rouge, La.) got the game within 10 points, but that was the closest the margin came the rest of the way. The Saints capped seven and a half minutes to intermission with a 25-16 scoring spread and were up 57-38.

Things did not change in the second half, as the Saints outscored UNTD 51-40 in that duration. Another unusual stat was OLLU shooting 18-of-41 (43.90) from the floor in both frames. The Saints drilled 15 three-pointers in 32 attempts and were 21-for-29 at the free throw line.

UNTD shot 48.1 percent (26-54) from the field and made six three-pointers. The team was 20-for-34 at the free throw line. The Trailblazers committed 25 turnovers and that led to Our Lady of the Lake scoring 35 points from the miscues. The home team also took care of the ball with 11 turnovers. The Saints swiped 11 steals compared to three by UNT Dallas.

The only statistic that was close was points in the paint favoring OLLU 40-38. Otherwise it was all Saints with big leads in points off turnovers (35-8), second chance points (18-4) and fastbreak points (34-14).

Demaryon Thornton (Chicago, Ill.) and Crawford were the top point scorers with 11 each. Crawford added six rebounds. Keylyn Sanders (Paris, Texas) grabbed a team-high eight rebounds and was part of a starting trio with seven points. Julius Morris (Houston, Texas) and Williams also had seven and were in the starting 5. Dreyon Thornton (Chicago, Ill.) tossed in nine points from the bench, while Anderson had a personal-high eight points and two-of-four triples that matched the elder brother Thornton.

All 12 participants for the Trailblazers found the points column, including Jaiden Goodwin (Dallas, Texas) making his collegiate debut.

Da Costa led a quartet of double-digit scorers with 14 points. Elliot contributed 13 points, while Matthew Gonzales contributed 12 points from the bench. Arthur Celestin Jr. notched a double-double with 10 points and 12 boards.

13 players for the Saints also found the scoring column, which means all 25 participating players in the game on Saturday were able to tally history in the box score.

UNT Dallas returns home to Trinity Leadership for a pair of RRAC matchups next week. The Trailblazers host Xavier University of Louisiana on December 11 at 7:30 p.m. and North American University on December 13 at 3:00 p.m.
