Yeldell leads UNTD defense to Steals Record; Smother Texas College in Chaotic Win

DALLAS – An up-tempo and at times chaotic pace of play highlighted the story of an otherwise dominant victory for University of North Texas at Dallas women's basketball over Texas College, 64-46, on Thursday night at Trinity Leadership Public School. The Trailblazers pushed out to an early lead and never were behind in this one, outscoring Texas College by at least six points throughout three quarters.

ShanDrea Yeldell (Dallas, Texas) broke a single-game record with 11 steals that was part of the team's record-tying 28 and helped attest to 45 Texas College turnovers. However, the Steers held the net positive in each category by one. The game featured full court presses, half-court traps, and several quick decisions that were a recipe for season-highs caused and allowed for the Trailblazers this season.

UNT Dallas does pick up its second win of 2026 and moves above .500 overall (6-5) and in conference (5-4) again. The Steers fall to 7-8 on the year and 5-4 in league play.

11 players scored for the Trailblazers with the leading scorer being their season leader, De'Asia Johnson (Dallas, Texas). The junior shot 50 percent from the floor (6-12) and scored 13 points to go with six rebounds and matched a career-high six steals. She had just as many against Oklahoma City on January 18, 2025. It is the third time this campaign that Johnson has swept at least five steals.

Channing Beauvais (Paradise, Texas) was the other Trailblazer in double figures with 11 points and went 6-for-8 at the free throw line. The starting five for UNTD did most of the scoring as Yeldell followed with eight points, Jade Myles (Dallas, Texas) and Kayden Riley (Dallas, Texas) were the next highest scorers with six points.

Yeldell added six assists to lead the team and go with her career-high 11 steals. The veteran guard previously held the steals record in a single-game two times with seven. She achieved the feat twice in February of 2025 against Oklahoma Panhandle State and at Southwestern Christian. Kelcy Henry was the first to earn the highest number of steals versus Huston-Tillotson on October 30, 2021.

Ke'Liyah Anderson (Dallas, Texas) tracked down a personal-best nine rebounds to lead all players, while Allysa Pendley (Waco, Texas) followed with eight. Johnson and Riley had six a piece, and Sophia Fisher (Taylor, Texas) was another guard helping the team on the glass with a personal-best five. The Trailblazers notched 54 rebounds – their second highest total on the season and in back-to-back games. Four conference games have resulted this season in the Trailblazers overtaking 50 boards.

The home team shot 38.6 percent (22-57) from the field with three made three-pointers and were 17-for-31 at the free throw line. The Trailblazers were able to generate a 31-17 advantage on points off turnovers, especially in the first quarter with a 13-1 edge. The Trailblazers also were ahead in points in the paint (28-22) and fastbreak points (12-10).

Texas College struggled shooting 15-of-60 from the field (25 percent), with two three-pointers, and 14-for-35 at the line. Jakairi Blacknell scored 10 points and had four steals.

A triple by Beauvais started the contest, and the forward quickly contributed on the defensive side with a big block. Steals by Yeldell and Johnson foreshadowed to what would be an uncomfortable game for maintaining possessions for the Steers, as Johnson's theft led to a breakaway basket. A three-pointer by TC's Jackson put the guests on the board and made it 5-3 with 7:25 left. That was the lone field goal made by Texas College, as UNTD's feisty defense held the opposition to 1-of-8 in the frame.

Exactly six minutes passed before the Steers scored another point, which was a free throw by Mia Riley. Within that span, the Trailblazers scored nine points and built a double-digit lead (14-4). Riley started the scoring on a layup and Yeldell drained a pair of triples with Pendley sticking a free throw in between. The Trailblazers offense also went quiet, as they scored a free throw in the final 2:52 minutes and entered the small break with a 15-8 lead.

The second quarter saw long stretches of neither side finding much offense. After trading baskets when one side would discover the bottom of the net, it was a stretch of eight UNTD points that ballooned the lead to 16 (27-11) with 2:25 before intermission. With seven minutes until that juncture, a quartet of Trailblazers notched a pair of points with Yeldell, Johnson, Myles, and Pendley scoring. Once again, it was the Trailblazers defense stealing the storyline by limiting the Steers to 3-of-19 from the field. They totaled seven points with two field goals at 8:12 and 7:20 in the second quarter. It was not until under two minutes that the Steers tallied points again and the next field goal was with 1:09 prior to the half. The Trailblazers held a 29-15 advantage.

Texas College matched UNT Dallas' energy and blitzed on defense to start the second half with seven straight points in 1:03 minutes that matched its entire second quarter output. This precarious start was short-lived, as Beauvais chimed in with a pair of free throws and got an offensive rebound for the putback that springboarded the Trailblazers back ahead by double figures. A steal by Johnson led to a fastbreak layup and the lead was 35-14 a minute later. The margin grew to as large as 22 (52-30) on a jumper in the last 20 seconds by Lauren Pete (Rockwall, Texas) and was sitting at 21 several times in the later portion of the third quarter. Both teams scored their highest point totals of the game in the third.

In the fourth quarter the Steers outdid UNTD by three points, 15-12. Two Myles free throws and Yeldell's 11th steal that led to a find on a streaking Johnson pushed its lead to 25 (56-31) for the largest of the contest. The team's final steal came from Riley with 2:20 left to match the team's record of 28 against Dallas Christian (10/29/22). Besides being an all-time total, the team also eclipsed 20 steals for the first time, with the previous highest being 19 at Texas A&M-San Antonio (12/4/25).

UNT Dallas closes the home RRAC doubleheader on Saturday against Jarvis Christian University at 1:00 p.m.
