Trailblazers Rock the Start of 2026; Snap Skid and Score Season-High at Southwest

HOBBS, N.M. – It was a great start to 2026, as University of North Texas at Dallas women's basketball scored a season-high thanks to outscoring University of the Southwest in each quarter en route to an 80-54 victory at Jack & Mabel Maddox Student Life Center on Saturday. Similar to the team's first meeting in Dallas, the Trailblazers jumped out to a big lead through the first quarter and put things away with a 21-12 third quarter.

The triumph snapped a season-long three-game losing streak for UNT Dallas, who swept the season series against the Mustangs. The Trailblazers move back to .500 with a 5-5 record and 4-4 conference record. Southwest dropped its ninth straight and fell to 4-10 on the year and 0-8 in conference.

De'Asia Johnson (Dallas, Texas) led the Trailblazers with 19 points, shooting 8-of-11 from the field and 3-of-5 from three-point territory. Johnson grabbed six rebounds.

ShanDrea Yeldell (Dallas, Texas) contributed 13 points, going 5-of-10 from the field and dished a game-high five assists.

Kaylyn Minor (Garland, Texas) registered season-highs with 13 points and 11 rebounds for her first double-double since 2022-23. Minor was 6-of-9 from the floor, had six offensive rebounds, two assists, and a blocked shot.

Channing Beauvais (Paradise, Texas) rounded out the quartet of double-digit scorers with 10 points and pulled down six boards.

The team grabbed 59 rebounds, which was one short of tying the single-game record as a team against Central Christian on February 1, 2024.

UNT Dallas shot 44.3 percent (35-79) from the field, with five three-pointers and 5-for-10 at the free throw line. The Trailblazers held a 22-4 advantage on points in the paint, 21-8 advantage on second chance points, and 16-14 edge on points off turnovers. UNTD totaled 21 assists, five blocks, and eight steals. The guests committed 17 turnovers.

Southwest was led by Scallion Alliah with 18 points and 10 boards for a double-double. She added two assists and blocks. Karinna Ortiz chipped in 16 points.

The Mustangs slumped shooting from the field with a 22.9 percent (16-70) result. They did drill nine trifectas and were 13-for-20 at the free throw line. USW compiled 34 rebounds, 13 assists, six blocks, and four steals.

The Trailblazers raced out to a nine-point lead to start the new year and conference rematch thanks to bookend jumpers by Yeldell. Kayden Riley (Dallas, Texas) had a jumper and Johnson buried a trey during the 9-point run in the first 53 seconds.

Southwest countered with the next four points, before the Trailblazer's top two scorers on the season went back to work. Yeldell had another jumper to give her six of the team's 11 points through 3:45 minutes, while Johnson picked up the pace with the next two baskets and increased her total to seven points. The tandem combined 13 of the team's 15 opening points and helped UNTD capture its first double figure advantage of the game with 3:50 left in the first quarter. A jumper by Sanaa Murphy-Showers (Plano, Texas) opened the Trailblazers largest lead of the game in the first with a 17-5 spread and three and a half minutes to go.

The Mustangs scored the next five points and a jumper by Minor with 12 seconds capped a 19-10 UNT Dallas lead.

Jade Myles (Dallas, Texas) scored an early basket to stretch the lead back to double-digits. The team's bungeed the margin under-and-over the double figure plateau a few times early in the second, but it was a steady lead for the Trailblazers heading into intermission up 41-28. Yeldell led with seven points to finish all of her scoring for the game in the first half, while Minor had five points from the bench and Myles tallied four-of-seven points in the 10-minute frame.

The Trailblazers put together their highest scoring quarter in the third with 21 points and held an 11-point edge during this stanza. Johnson highlighted the nice start to the second half with consecutive triples and notched eight points overall in the quarter. With the margin up to 19, Southwest responded with seven points including a three by Ortiz to nip the score to 47-35 with 7:23 left. Myles answered with a trey of her own. Then, a jumper by Minor, layup by Johnson, and four points in a row by Beauvais at the line and offensive rebound putback swelled the UNTD lead to 21 points with just under four minutes remaining. A layup by Ke'Liyah Anderson (Dallas, Texas) opened the largest lead of the game at that juncture by 24 (62-38).

Beauvais scored all her points in the second half, with six towards the end of the third. Khalaizah Martin (Dallas, Texas) started the fourth quarter with a basket and made it a 24-point lead again. Lauren Pete (Rockwall, Texas) and back-to-back layups by Allysa Pendley (Waco, Texas) provided another mini-push for UNTD's lead up to 28 with a 70-42 margin and six minutes remaining. A couple of baskets by Minor increased the lead to above 30 points with the greatest margin being 33 (80-47) with 2:13 left.

All 13 players that traveled were able to see time on the court this game, with everyone playing for at least seven minutes. 11 different Trailblazers compiled at least two points and made a field goal. The team's 35 field goals marked a season-most and both times the team has eclipsed 30 made field goals this season has been against the Mustangs (they made 33 in the first matchup).

UNT Dallas returns to Trinity Leadership Public School next Thursday and Saturday for two new Red River Athletic Conference teams. The Trailblazers host Texas College on January 8 at 5:30 p.m. and Jarvis Christian on Jan. 10 at 1:00 p.m.
