UNTD Men's Basketball Unable to Slow Sharp Shooting Stallions

STAFFORD, Texas – It was difficult to slow down a hot shooting North American University team that shot 75 percent in the second half from the field and three-point territory in what resulted in a 93-67 result for University of North Texas at Dallas on Thursday. The Trailblazers competed closer than the final score indicated, but a 12-point halftime deficit eventually ballooned out of hand down the stretch in a season split between the squads.

UNT Dallas moved to 7-11 overall and 6-8 in conference play. North American improved to 13-7 overall and 9-6 in conference play.

Greg Crawford (Houston, Texas) and DaRyan Williams (Austin, Texas) were leaders on the scoring statistical categories with 16 and 10 points, respectively. Crawford added team-highs seven rebounds and three steals, while Williams dished three assists to match a team-high among a quartet of players. Crawford, Anthony Hunter (Fort Worth, Texas), and Sedric Curry, Jr. (Baton Rouge, La.) also dished three dimes each. 10 of the 12 players for UNT Dallas seeing time on the court did tally at least one field goal and amassed at least three points.

The Trailblazers shot 45.5 percent (25-55) from the floor and that included 50 percent (13-26) in the second half. The team had five three-pointers and was 12-for-21 at the free throw line. They came up with 24 rebounds with 10 on the offensive side of the ball. The guests shared the ball with 17 assists and turned it over 17 times, while getting eight steals.

Both teams had 33 points from the bench tonight.

NAU was just on another planet tonight, shooting 38-of-63 from the field with a 60.3 percentile. The Stallions made eight three-pointers and were 9-for-10 at the charity stripe. The Stallions amassed 60 points in the paint with 30 per half. They committed nine turnovers and had 11 steals, while distributing 25 assists. They grabbed 32 boards.

Kemani Wilson led a quintet of double-digit scorers with 19 points. Jamarric Hammond (16), Joseph Cormier (12), and Jayden Jackson (11) rounded out four top scorers from the starting unit. Oakley Lewis had 12 from the bench. The starting five combined with 23 assists.

The game opened with Curry Jr. and Williams tallying four points for UNTD to gather an early lead. 2:43 minutes lapsed before NAU found its first points, but it was not long before the home team was galloping ahead with six straight points in a minute. Dreyon Thornton (Chicago, Ill.) buried a three-pointer to trade leads, but the Stallions raced out in front by seven points thanks to eight unanswered. The Trailblazers continued to battle back, as they came within four and around the midway point slimed the score to three after a trifecta by Dreyon Thornton (Chicago, Ill.). North American charged to a nine-point lead and eventually surpassed the double-digit marker for the first time at 4:46 on a three by Hammond (30-20). With 1:26 before intermission, the largest lead of the game at that moment was 15 points (40-25). UNT Dallas closed the score to 10 thanks to Williams, Keylyn Sanders (Paris, Texas), and Crawford rattling in points. A good tip-in by the Stallions capped a 43-31 frame at the buzzer.

Two triples Demaryon Thornton (Chicago, Ill.) and Eli Taylor (Elizabeth, N.J.) sparked an 8-0 start to the second half and a layup by Hunter cut the deficit in half 1:21 minutes. That momentum was snuffed as an equalizing run followed by the Stallions with multiple dunks and a triple by Hammond to push the margin back to 13 points (54-41).

The Trailblazers battled to get the score within single digits, again. Crawford had a dunk following his own offensive rebound to close the score within 10 (56-46) and then swiped a steal that led to Williams getting fouled and going to the free throw line. He made both. Orion Virden (Pine Bluff, Ark.) made his season debut and first appearance as a Trailblazer and was immediately impactful with two layups for his only points of the game. Each made shot cut the deficit under double-digits, but the Stallions continued to answer back. A three by Keylyn Sanders (Paris, Texas) with 11:10 left was the final occurrence UNTD was within less than 10 points (64-55). The Trailblazers continued to try and halt North American, but a 77-63 score was the closest the score would remain once a large run under four minutes pulled the Stallions away.

UNT Dallas looks to rebound on Saturday with its second stop on this road trip at Xavier University (La.). Tip-off follows the women's game around 3:00 p.m.
