Xavier (La.) pulls away from UNTD Women's Basketball in 4th as Slide Continues

NEW ORLEANS, La. – University of North Texas at Dallas women's basketball dropped a 73-55 result at Xavier University of Louisiana on Saturday afternoon. The game already had UNT Dallas battling behind with several players in early foul trouble and three that disqualified and two more with four fouls. Xavier (La.) was able to use its size advantage in the paint to control the boards, 57-38. The Trailblazers were able to compete with several obstacles in the way, but 24-8 fourth quarter sent the Gold Nuggets to a lopsided result and split the season series.

The Trailblazers finish the month of January at .500 with a 4-4 mark. After winning four straight games for their longest winning streak since 2021, they dropped a season-long four straight games, falling under .500 at 8-9 overall and 7-8 in the conference. Xavier (La.) improves to 12-8 on the season and 8-6 in conference play.

The top three season leading scorers for UNT Dallas eclipsed double figures in points led by De'Asia Johnson (Dallas, Texas) with 14 points. She was limited to 28 minutes with foul trouble and eventually being disqualified with over four minutes left in regulation. She managed to add six rebounds, one assist, and one steal.

Jade Myles (Dallas, Texas) followed with 13 points, making three triples and collecting three boards, one assist, and one steal.

ShanDrea Yeldell (Dallas, Texas) completed the trio with 10 points and led the team on the glass with seven boards, led the team with six dimes, and led the team with five steals. She was the only player to be on the floor 40 minutes.

Channing Beauvais (Paradise, Texas) chipped in eight points and five rebounds.

The Trailblazers struggled shooting from the floor today at 28.6 percent (18-63) overall, 29.2 percent (7-24) from three, and 57.1 percent (12-21) from the free throw line. They did commit a season-low 16 turnovers. The team's 11 steals extends the double-digit streak in that category to seven games in a row and 15 altogether. UNT Dallas surpassed 40 rebounds in 11-of-13 games to begin the season. During this four-game slide, the Trailblazers have pulled down fewer than 40 boards each time.

Despite the height disparity favoring the Gold Nuggets and lopsided rebound comparison, both teams scored 20 points in the paint. XU led in points off turnovers (16-7), second chance points (11-9), and fastbreak points (7-6).

Xavier (La.) shot 31 percent (18-58) overall with five three-pointers and a 32-44 edge at the free throw line. The Gold Nuggets tallied 15 assists, 20 turnovers, four blocks, and seven steals.

Alicia Blanton and Shania Swan captured double-doubles with 14 points for Blanton and Swan for 13. The top scoring tandem this game each had 10 boards. Jala Williams tossed in 10 points.

A three-pointer by XU's Williams started the game off in under a minute. Beauvais found UNTD's first basket and a fastbreak layup by Yeldell flipped the score in favor of the Trailblazers. Johnson dropped the next two jumpers for an 8-4 Trailblazers' advantage with 6:17 left in the first. After the Gold Nuggets leveled the score at eight around the midway point, Johnson swished a trifecta to propel the Trailblazers back ahead by that amount. Another trifecta from Yeldell doubled the lead with 4:09 remaining. Xavier (La.) closed the gap to a point and held UNT Dallas scoreless within this span. It was the only quarter that UNT Dallas outscored its opponent.

Yeldell connected on a three-pointer to open the second quarter. Johnson had another trey and two free throws by Yeldell would continue to keep UNTD in front by two possessions or six points. Myles had a big play with 4:17 remaining as an old fashioned three-point play was completed to push the Trailblazers on top by seven points (27-20). It was their largest lead of the game and was quickly reduced with two triples and a layup for an 8-0 run and lead change with 2:02 remaining before halftime. A split at the free throw line by Lauren Pete (Rockwall, Texas) knotted the scoreboard at 28, but Xavier (La.) had more success at the charity stripe in the closing plays to support a narrow 30-29 halftime edge.

The Trailblazers regained the lead in the third quarter with Beauvais making a layup after an offensive board. The freshman forward connected on two more free throws to keep pace with Xavier (La.) at 33. Myles drained a trifecta at 7:44 to send UNTD on top by a slim margin again (36-35). For the first time in the game, the Gold Nuggets pushed out to a multi-possession advantage of six points (42-36) with 4:22 left in the frame. UNT Dallas gave a resilient response with Johnson scoring a jumper in the post and Myles making a trifecta. The Trailblazers continued getting good players to pull within a point, including a rare four-point play by Myles as she nailed her third three-pointer of the quarter. She made a free throw to complete the four-point play she was fouled on. Xavier (La.) earned a split at the free throw line after that to head into the last 10 minutes up 49-47.

This is when doom hit the Trailblazers, as they could not find any points for four minutes. Down eight, Ke'Liyah Anderson (Dallas, Texas) scored on a fastbreak layup assisted by Yeldell to make the deficit six points (55-49). Anderson had two more points at the foul line to creep the margin within single digits, but the Gold Nuggets extended the lead down the stretch and were able to secure the large margin win.

UNT Dallas did make a combined 19 three-pointers on this two-game road trip and are committing fewer turnovers.

UNT Dallas is home for three games this upcoming week starting with a makeup game against Texas A&M-San Antonio on Monday, February 2, at 5:30 p.m. All three games are at Trinity Leadership Public School and will feature a tough challenge with each opponent ranked in the top three of the Red River Athletic Conference standings. The Trailblazers need to regather the start of January's vibes as the calendar hits the start of a new month again in 2026.
