19-2 Start highlights Big First Half that Carries Trailblazers over Texas College

DALLAS – A hot start to the game led to a big first half performance that carried University of North Texas at Dallas men's basketball to an 80-69 victory over Texas College on Thursday night at Trinity Leadership Public School. The Trailblazers scored 14 points across three and a half minutes to begin the game and pushed out to a 17-point lead at halftime, 42-25. Texas College rallied back in the second half, but the Trailblazers stalled the run and had a late push engineered by their season's leading scorers: Greg Crawford (Houston, Texas), DaRyan Williams (Austin, Texas), and Demaryon Thornton (Chicago, Ill.).

The win gives UNT Dallas two straight to begin 2026 and is the first time this season that the team has won consecutive times. The Trailblazers overall record improves to 5-8 and conference record goes to 4-5. Texas College falls to 2-12 and 1-8 in conference.

Greg Crawford (Houston, Texas) led his team with 18 points and recorded his fourth double-double with a record-setting 23 rebounds. The previous record was 17 by Deandre Robinson versus Langston on February 12, 2022. Crawford improves his all-time scoring total to 719 at UNT Dallas. The forward also dished a team-high four assists.

JT Curry (Baton, Rouge, La.) tied a personal-high 14 points from the bench, going 5-of-9 at the field and 4-for-5 at the free throw line. Dreyon Thornton (Chicago, Ill.) tossed in 10 points with 2-of-3 from three-point range and dished three assists. Williams and his brother Demaryon Thornton also had three assists as the starting quartet mentioned combined for 13 of the team's 21 assists. The season-high in dimes occurred back-to-back contests to start 2026.

Brooks Anderson (Waco, Texas) and Eli Taylor (Elizabeth N.J.) each chipped in seven points from the bench, as the latter made his season debut. The entire bench scored 37 points, while 11-of-13 players for the Trailblazers scored tonight.

UNT Dallas shot 43.1 percent (31-72) from the floor and 8-of-27 (29.6 percent) from three, which matched a season-high in makes and attempts with the LSU-Shreveport contest (12/20/25). The team went 10-for-17 at the free throw line. The Trailblazers eclipsed 30 field goals two straight games and put through the most makes on the campaign. They tied a season-high 51 rebounds with their game at Huston-Tillotson (11/15/25).

The Trailblazers held a 22-12 advantage on points off turnovers, 11-5 advantage on second chance points, 44-26 advantage on points in the paint, and 6-0 advantage on fastbreak points.

Texas College improved on its 25.8 percent first half with a 41.4 percent-clip in the second half to equal 33.3 percent (20-60) overall. The Steers made three triples and were 26-for-34 at the free throw line. They totaled 38 rebounds, 11 assists, and three steals.

Shaysten Cornish scored a game-high 20 points, while Jason Roseberry Jr. claimed a double-double with 14 points and 11 boards in all 40 minutes.

It was the quickest start for the Trailblazers this season, as Crawford got the 14-point streak started with a quick layup. After a Sedric Curry Jr. (Baton Rouge, La.) free throw on two tries, Crawford added another layup and Drey. Thornton sank a triple to open an 8-0 advantage through two and a half minutes. 30 seconds later, the other Thornton linked up with his brother on a trifecta of his own to stretch the lead to double-digits for the rest of the game. Thornton buried his other three-pointer on consecutive attempts to cap the torrid start.

A layup by Marcus Jones put Texas College on the scoreboard five minutes into the game. JT Curry scored an old fashioned three-point play to stretch the lead to 17 (19-2) with 12:34 left. The Trailblazers continued firing on all ends as a three-pointer by Anderson ticked the largest UNTD lead at the time to 18 points. Anderson accounted for the remainder of his points on the rare four-point play with a made trey and dropping the extra free throw. Baskets by Curry and Williams ballooned the advantage to 22 points (34-12) with 7:15 before the break. The Steers spent the next five minutes cutting into the margin and narrowing things to 16 (38-22). The home squad responded with consecutive baskets by the team's other newcomer making his season debut, Jonathan Joseph (Houston, Texas). After etching his first UNTD points of the season, Joseph put an exclamation point on the thrilling half with a dunk after Williams picked a steal and found Joseph for the finish. That pushed the margin back to 20 with two minutes left, and the Steers got the last three points to carry a 17-point lead into halftime.

The second half saw the Steers outscore UNTD, 44-38. A three-pointer by Drey. Thornton stretched the lead to 20 in the first minute. After a layup by Crawford sent the Trailblazers in front by 21 (48-27) with 18:16. It was back-and-forth throughout the first portion of the second stanza. A triple by Julius Morris (Houston, Texas) and jumper by Curry pushed the lead back to 21 a final time. After free throws by Roseberry Jr. with 12:49 left, the Trailblazers never led by at least 20 the rest of the way.

Texas College put together a few mini-bursts but never came closer than 13 points except for the towards the end when the closest was 11 points. The game was in-hand for the Trailblazers by that juncture. With 4:13 left, Crawford threw down a dunk, but Roseberry Jr. countered with a triple to reduce the gap to 13 (74-61) with 4:05 remaining. The next two minutes saw UNT Dallas lockdown the Steers and a pair of free throws from Drey. Thornton and then a steal and assist from Dem. Thornton led to a layup by Williams that essentially protected the Steers form gaining too much traction. They did score six unanswered points from 2:46 to 1:36 to make it a tighter 78-67 scorer than it had felt considering how the majority of the contest went. As the clock ticked under a minute, Drey. Thorton picked a steal and Crawford put the game away with a final layup to provide him 12 second half points.

The 80 points marked consecutive season-high totals in regulation for the Trailblazers to start 2026.
