Enough Plays down the Stretch lift UNTD Women's Basketball over LSUA

CEDAR HILL, Texas – A dramatic finish saw University of North Texas at Dallas women's basketball prevail with a 74-71 victory over Louisiana State University of Alexandria on Thursday night. A 19-10 second quarter helped boost the Trailblazers on top for most of the game. LSUA remained persistent and grabbed a single-point lead with 3:38 left in the fourth quarter, but Channing Beauvais (Paradise, Texas) answered with a shot and De'Asia Johnson (Dallas, Texas) buried a trifecta to push the Trailblazers in front down the stretch.

The Generals remained in pursuit and came within two points in the final moments. Needing a three-pointer to keep the game alive, Blair Smith had her attempt off the mark to the left-side and the follow-up tip by the Generals missed as time expired. The Trailblazers won their first game in 2026 determined by three points or fewer after dropping the past three games in that scenario.

While not the same score, this game played similar to the first meeting in Alexandria with the score being an LSUA 71-68 triumph.

The win for UNTD snapped the Generals' four-game winning streak and lifted the team out of a three-way tie for the final three seeds in the Red River Athletic Conference (RRAC). The Trailblazers improved to 10-13 overall and 9-12 in conference with sole possession of the sixth seed. LSUA drops to 13-13 and 12-9 in conference play.

A quartet of players scored double figures led by ShanDrea Yeldell (Dallas, Texas) with 16 points, as she went 7-of-10 from the floor and 1-of-2 from downtown. She picked up a team-high five steals and dished four assists.

Jade Myles (Dallas, Texas) followed with 15 points and picked up four steals.

Beauvais notched a career-high 13 points that included a perfect six free throws. 11 of her points came in the second half, including six to lead the Trailblazers in the pivotal fourth quarter that included key points to retain the advantage. Beauvais tallied a personal-best four blocks, which is the most by an individual this campaign.

Kaylyn Minor (Garland, Texas) scored 4-of-5 field goals and amassed 10 points. She grabbed seven boards to match Sanaa Murphy-Showers with a team-high.

The Trailblazers totaled 42 rebounds, 16 assists, five blocks, and 21 steals. They committed 17 turnovers. Their past two wins have resulted in 21 steals, and the team has matched that total in four contests, now. The season-high mark is 28. The Trailblazers forced LSUA into 28 turnovers and were able to gain a 24-10 advantage on points off turnovers.

UNTD shot 36.5 percent (27-74) from the field with seven made three-pointers and 13-for-23 at the free throw line.

The Generals shot 38.2 percent (26-68) from the floor with 2 three-pointers and were 17-for-26 at the line. They garnered 54 rebounds, which led to a 17-11 edge on second chance points and 42-34 edge on points in paint. LSUA also held a 14-6 edge on fastbreak points.

Sydney Person led all players with 23 points, while Justice Young claimed a double-double with 12 points and rebounds.

LSUA outscored the Trailblazers by a slight margin in three-of-four quarters, but the nine-point advantage in the second frame proved to be the difference. The game opened with each side trading leads. Myles converted on her lone trifecta of the game and was able to gain a free throw for a not-so-rare anymore four-point play for the guard. After going up 6-2, the Generals countered with nine straight points to go up four minutes into action.

Allysa Pendley got a layup and after Yeldell poked a steal and scored a layup, it was 11-10 and five and a half minutes left in the first. Johnson made the go-ahead three at the midway juncture. The Generals responded with the next six points and led until the first break. Yeldell had a steal and layup to make it 19-18 with a little over a minute left. LSUA's Young scored with five seconds left to wrap up a 21-18 road team edge.

Both teams were slow to gain much momentum in the first half of the second quarter, as the Generals held a narrow lead. Kayden Riley (Dallas, Texas) made a layup at 5:20 and two Beauvais free throws that turned the lead would be followed by a three by Lauren Pete (Rockwall, Texas) to spurn a 5-0 run. Myles added a jumper to extend the run to seven points and largest lead by either side at that moment. The Generals climbed within two (31-29) with 1:53 before intermission, but Johnson had a key three and Yeldell split at the line and scored a final layup to give the Trailblazers a six-point halftime lead of 37-31.

In the third quarter, the Trailblazers had layups by Murphy-Showers and Minor – which came on back-to-back plays, to mark a double-digit margin (10 points) by either side in this game. The Generals went on a small surge with six straight points to cut the gap to three points (48-45) and 2:47 left in the third quarter. A steal by Murphy-Showers went to Yeldell who got the assist to Myles on a jumper that moved the margin to five points. The Trailblazers got two Beauvais free throws after Myles splitting shortly prior to open an eight-point lead with 30 seconds remaining. A trey by Generals Reese Stephens closed the quarter with a UNTD 53-48 lead.

The last quarter proved to be a tight battle, as the Trailblazers went out to a seven-point lead after two Minor free throws. Six points by LSUA sliced the deficit to a point of 59-58 with six minutes left. Beauvais got a second-chance basket and Johnson created a steal that was a fastbreak layup by Yeldell to make the score two possessions. As mentioned above, LSUA gathers its only lead of the second half with six points in a row to go above by a point. The next five points on UNTD's side with Johnson knocking down a triple with 2:11 left proved to be huge. Johnson had nine points behind three three-pointers, but each occurred when the team desperately needed some offense. A Jumper by Yeldell with 54 seconds left gave UNT Dallas a two possession lead (72-65). The Generals scored two more baskets, while the Trailblazers split at the free throw line on two other trips to make it a three-point deficit. Thankfully, the Trailblazers had enough free throws and one final defensive stop that allowed for a big win in the standings and for morale heading into the final regular season game.

Saturday is "Senior Day" for the Trailblazers with Murphy-Showers, Minor, Allysa
Pendley (Waco, Texas), and Yeldell being honored. The team hosts Louisiana Christian at 1:00 p.m.
