No. 15 LSUS defeats Trailblazers on Thursday

CEDAR HILL, Texas – University of North Texas at Dallas men's basketball battled No. 15 LSU-Shreveport on Thursday night at Trinity Leadership Public School. The Trailblazers battled a top 25 and first place team in the Red River Athletic Conference for most of the game, but a 20-point second half pushed the margins that were difficult for UNTD to keep up with on the night.

The Trailblazers drop to 9-12 overall and 8-9 in conference play after reaching .500 for the first time in league play on Monday. LSUS improved to 19-4 overall and 16-1 in conference play.

DaRyan Williams (Austin, Texas) led the Trailblazers with a double-double 11 points and 12 rebounds. This included eight offensive rebounds.

Sedric Curry Jr. (Baton Rouge, La.) continued his strong home stretch with nine points and six boards. Greg Crawford (Houston, Texas) tossed in eight points and eight boards.

The Trailblazers outdid LSUS 52-51 on rebounds, as they were one board shy of tying their new season record as a team in a single-game that was accomplished five days ago at Xavier (La.). Thursday's rebounding total was composed by mostly offensive rebounds with a season-best 33. Williams and Crawford combined for 15 with eight and seven, respectively.

UNT Dallas led in second chance points (22-17), while the teams were even with 16 points off turnovers. The Pilots led 44-30 on points in the paint and 8-2 on fastbreak points.

UNTD shot 24.7 percent (20-81) from the field and were able to make three triples. The home team made 12-of-25 free throws. Beyond the 52 boards, the Trailblazers also had 10 assists, three blocks, and eight steals.

LSU-Shreveport shot 53.1 percent (34-64) from the field and were able to down five three-pointers and tallied 14 free throws on 21 attempts. The Pilots dished 16 assists and compiled 17 blocks. They added 13 steals.

Hayden Brittingham led the Pilots with 24 points and was 11-of-24 from the floor. He added six blocked shots. Thaddeus Johnson followed with 22 points, while Emareyon McDonald tossed in 14 points. Alexzaye Johnson and Khi Wallace combined for 25 rebounds with 13 and 12, respectively.

It was a back-and-forth start to the game with Curry Jr. scoring the first five points for the Trailblazers. After three minutes, both sides went through cold spells as LSUS popped out to an 11-5 lead. At 13:55 left, Williams scored on a layup after cleaning up with an offensive rebound. This broke a 4:03 scoring drought for UNTD. Williams grabbed another rebound for a second chance opportunity that led to Anthony Hunter (Fort Worth, Texas) getting a layup that was assisted by Dreyon Thornton (Chicago, Ill.) to cut the score to 13-11 seven minutes into the game. The teams continued to trade scores with the deficit never wavering past two or four points.

LSU-Shreveport went on another surge from 10:32 to 9:24 as Brittingham made a jumper, McDonald dropped a trey, and Nico Jones opened a double-digit lead for the first time on the night with a dunk. A pair of free throws by UNT Dallas' Orion Virden (Pine Bluff, Ark.) cut the deficit to single digits (26-17) with under nine before halftime. Five points for the Pilots pushed the gap up to 14 points.

The Trailblazers got a three-pointer by Demaryon Thornton (Chicago, Ill.) at 6:13 reduced the margin to 10 points (31-21).  They were unable to generate much offense overall and had too many cold pockets, as the next time the home side scored was a pair of free throws by Williams at 2:22. It ended a 7-0 run to shrink the margin to 15 points (38-23). Crawford added a pair of free throws and a triple by Drey. Thornton placed the scoring margin to 10 points. The sides traded blows until the final horn, as LSUS got a tip-in by Solomon Ray at the buzzer. It reflected a 42-30 score for the Pilots.

The Pilots ballooned their lead to 20 points in the first five minutes of the second half. UNT Dallas had answers through the first six minutes, as each counter nipped the deficit to 15 points. The last blast was a layup by Crawford and then a layup by Hunter on a fastbreak. Dante Curry-El (Charlottesville, Va.) had a layup with 13:50 left, and Brooks Anderson (Waco, Texas) buried a triple to mark the final time the score was closest of the game at 15 (56-41) with 12:07 left. The Pilots were relentless and the ability to make shots proved the difference tonight as they built a lead above 20 points most of the way until the last horn.

UNT Dallas concludes a three-game home stand on Saturday versus Texas A&M-Texarkana with a 3:00 p.m. tip-off.
