Game Recap: Men's Basketball |

The Streak Continues

SILOAM SPRING, Ark -- It was obvious here Thursday (Jan. 27) that John Brown University's plush  Bill George Arena is hardly the place teams go to dispose of unwanted losing streaks. The host Golden Eagles showed little hospitality to the struggling University of North Texas at Dallas squads as it defeated the women Trailblazers 74-56, then used a late surge to win over the men, 73-65.
For both UNTD teams it was a fourth straight loss, sending them deeper in the Sooner Athletic Conference standings. Josh Howard's men are now 4-11 in league play and 8-14 for the season. Rodney Belcher's women are 4-11 and 10-12.
The Trailblazers men made a battle of it, leading 38-30 at intermission and still very much in contention midway through the second half before the Eagles surged to open a 10-point lead, then held on for their eighth SAC victory against seven losses.
Rodrick Gaines, connecting on four of seven three-point attempts, led the Trailblazers scoring with 16 points with Vernon Johnson contributing 12 points and 11 rebounds. Larry Rusk added 11 points to the cause.
Luke Harper led the John Brown scoring with 25, eight of his points coming at the free throw line.
The UNTD women got off to a slow start, trailing 16-9 after the first quarter and 40-22 at the half, and never managed to fight their way into contention.
Emerging standout Delyssa Miller led the Trailblazers scoring with 27 points and Tamia Miller added 15. Three Golden Eagles scored in double digits, led by Maddie Altman's 16.
The Trailblazers are back on the road Saturday (Jan. 29) for a doubleheader visit to Oklahoma City University. The women's game is scheduled for 2 p.m. and the men will play at 4 p.m.
