Men Win

Box Score Even at halftime Monday (Feb. 7) evening, the University of North Texas at Dallas' Josh Howard had an ever-so-slight slight smile on his face. The coach's Trailblazers were in complete control of a game for the first time in weeks, off and running toward an 86-66 Sooner Athletic Conference victory over Southwestern Christian at the Singing Hills Recreation Center.
The win erased a five-game UNTD losing streak and moved their record to 5-12 in league play and 9-15 for the season.  Too, it provided needed momentum for the final week of the 2021-22 regular season and the SAC tournament.
For Coach Rodney Belcher's women, however, it was another all-too-familiar scenario.  Falling behind early, they lost their seventh straight as Southwest Christian's Eagles won, 67-50. Even with a trio of players scoring in double figures, they suffered their second defeat in a 24-hour period, having fallen to Mid-America Christian on Sunday afternoon. Both games were make-ups of postponements during the recent winter blast.
It was senior guard Larry Rusk leading the way for the UNTD men as he led the scoring with 23 points while Vernon Johnson added 16 and Christian Plummer scored 15. This, however, was an all-hands-on-deck victory as the energized Trailblazers won the rebound battle (35-34), played well defensively, and at one point held a 28-point margin against a team it has lost to by double figures earlier in the season.
For the women, Zyunn Cormier, Tamisa Miller, and Delyssa Miller scored 14 points each.
A busy week at Singing Hills continues Thursday (Feb. 10) when the Trailblazers squads host SAC opponent Central Christian in an evening doubleheader, then with Saturday (Feb. 12) afternoon games against Langston University.
