UNTD Women strong start couldn't power through MACU

DALLAS, TX- UNTD women's basketball's strong start not enough to hold off the MACU Evangels as they lose third game in a row 70-52. 

The Trailblazers, (2-9, 2-9) battled the Evangels (11-6, 5-6) from the get-go and went back and forth in scoring  in the first quarter with MACU taking a 18-16 lead into the second quarter off of Shy Christopher's 12 first quarter points and 58% from the field. The Trailblazers shot 43% from the field hitting 2-7 from behind the arc.

In the second quarter, UNTD put together a strong 10 minutes of basketball outscoring the Evangels 23-17. This quarter saw a team effort as 7 different Trailblazers scored led by Sanaa Murphy-Showers with 6 points and 2 rebounds. The Trailblazers also shot 50% from the floor and took a 39-35 lead into the locker room.

In the third and fourth quarters it was all Evangels as they outscored the Trailblazers 35-13 in the second half. The Trailblazers went ice cold from the field shooting just 23% (6-26) from the field. Second chance points and points in the paint plaqued the Trailblazers as the Evangels had 20 second chance points and 32 points in the paint to UNTD's 10 and 20.

Kayla James led the Trailblazers with 9 points, 4 rebounds and 3 assists. ZyUnn Cormier, Sanaa Murphy-Showers and Breniya Arnold all finished with 8 points.

The Trailblazers are back home for their next conference contest as they take on the Rams of Texas Wesleyan on Thursday, January 25th. Tip-off is set for 6:00pm at Trinity Basin.
