Trailblazers fall at Wayland Baptist on Thursday

PLAINVIEW, Texas – University of North Texas at Dallas fell 94-66 at Wayland Baptist on Thursday evening. Senior Eryka Patton (Hutchins, Texas) recorded her fourth double-double in the first six games with 22 points and a season-high 13 rebounds.

The Trailblazers (1-5, 0-4 SAC) took an early lead thanks to one-of-five trifectas by senior Mya Bills (Rockwall, Texas) that made it 5-2 a minute and a half into the contest. UNTD led twice in the game with the first points by Patton and then Bills broke the tie with her triple. An 11-0 scoring swing pushed the Pioneers (6-0, 3-0 SAC) ahead the rest of the game. With the lead up to eight points, Patton got a layup to slice the margin to 15-9 with 4:21 left, but that was the closest the score would be. Wayland Baptist finished the opening quarter in front 26-13.

In the second quarter, the Trailblazers received the first five points from their leading scorers of the game, a trey by Bills and layup by Patton to bring the deficit to eight (26-18). One other instance where Patton went two-for-two at the free throw line made the margin single-digits at nine again but would be the last time. UNTD trailed 51-25 at halftime.

The Trailblazers outscored the Pioneers, 20-18, in the third quarter and had their highest scoring output in the fourth quarter with 21 points. UNTD benefited from nine points in the third by Bills as she went 3-of-5 from downtown. It was not enough to close the margin against Wayland Baptist.

Patton led the Trailblazers in scoring for back-to-back games and eclipsed 20 points for the first time this season in each of them. She made seven field goals for the third time on the campaign and was 8-for-10 at the free throw line. She added a season-high 13 rebounds, two steals, and a block.

Bills delivered her best performance on the season with 19 points and drilled five three-pointers. Bills was four points off matching a career-high from 2023-24 season and two three-pointers away from tying that feat last season, too.

Senior Skye Dugan (Richardson, Texas) rounded out the trio of double-digit scorers for the Trailblazers with 12 points. Dugan added a season-high six assists and eclipsed three steals for the third time on the year. Five of the six games played for Dugan have been a double-digit scoring variety.

The team made a season-high 20 field goals in 25 trips to the charity stripe.

Wayland Baptist scored 26 points off turnovers and was led by Megan Nestor with a game-high 24 points and matching the game-best 13 rebounds. Emily Sigala and Kaitlyn Jerden tossed in 15 and 13 points, respectively.

UNT Dallas remains on the road this Saturday for a 2:00 p.m. tip-off against Oklahoma Panhandle State.
