Trailblazers drop Tight Game at John Brown

SILOAM SPRINGS, Ark. – University of North Texas at Dallas women's basketball came up short in a back-and-forth game on Saturday afternoon against John Brown. The Trailblazers had a couple of chances to tie or win the game in the closing seconds but had two equalizer shots miss off the rim and John Brown prevailed with a 56-54 victory at Bill George Arena.

Senior Skye Dugan (Richardson, Texas) tallied 15 points, which was second on the team, but her efforts in the final minute gave the Trailblazers a chance. The Golden Eagles made two free throws to grab their largest lead of the game by five (56-51) with under a minute left. Dugan answered with a three-pointer to make it a two-point game with 49 seconds left. The guard came up with a block on the other side of the ball. John Brown retained possession and missed which led to the 14th rebound by sophomore De'Asia Johnson (Dallas, Texas). That tied a personal-best for Johnson this season and led all players in the contest.

With 16 seconds remaining, Dugan missed an inside jumper, but senior Mya Bills (Rockwall, Texas) scraped for a second chance. The Trailblazers called timeout again with four seconds left. Dugan was able to get away for another inside shot but the contested look missed short on the right-hand side. Dugan got the ball back but time expired.

UNT Dallas moves to 4-11 on the season and 3-10 in Sooner Athletic Conference play, as it begins the second half of the league schedule. John Brown improved to 9-7 overall and 7-5 in conference play.

The Trailblazers finished the opening quarter with a 16-11 lead. It was a tight game throughout the afternoon, but that was the lone period that UNTD outscored John Brown. It did not appear that would be a good scoring frame for the Trailblazers at first since it took six minutes to get four points after a Dugan jumper. She added a three to give UNTD a 7-6 lead and sophomore Sanaa Murphy-Showers (Dallas, Texas) followed with one on the next UNTD possession to cap an 8-0 run. Senior Eryka Patton (Hutchins, Texas) made a jumper and a steal by teammate ShanDrea Yeldell led to her scoring on a fastbreak to make a 16-9 advantage. JBU got a shot at the buzzer to close the frame.

Two quick baskets for UNTD opened its largest lead of the game (20-11) by nine to start the second quarter. The Golden Eagles countered four minutes in with seven straight points to slice the deficit to a point (22-21). The Trailblazers fought to maintain the narrow lead. At 2:55 left in the first half, John Brown grabbed a 27-26 lead on a jumper by Sarah Snodgrass. UNTD's Bills forced a steal and made a jumper to flip the lead. After JBU split at the line to tie things, the Trailblazers scored the final four points in the last 1:14 to go up 32-28 at halftime. Junior Alysa Pendley (Waco, Texas) and Dugan scored the baskets, including the latter making one at the buzzer for the guests this time.

The third quarter featured another fast start for UNTD with two baskets doubling the lead to eight in under a minute and a half. JBU had a timely three-pointer and scored the next five points to get back to a one-possession game. UNT Dallas never trailed in the third, but struggled shooting 5-of-13 from the floor. The Golden Eagles were 6-of-19 but had three from downtown and leveled the score at 43 with 1:24 left. Patton made a jumper to push UNTD up with 23 seconds before the final break between quarters.

Dugan had the first field goal to begin the fourth, but the next four points went to JBU and knotted the game at 47. Both offenses stalled from 7:58 to 4:20 without a single point. Both defenses were generating turnovers as neither side could find the bottom of the net. The Trailblazers got up by a pair of points two more times, before a go-ahead triple with two and a half minutes by Abbey Sanders lifted John Brown for good. That sparked a 7-0 surge with Snodgrass scoring the next four points. That opened the largest gap of the game for JBU (56-51) and was the difference as the Trailblazers came up short while trying to answer back.

Both teams struggled shooting, as UNT Dallas shot 23-of-70 (32.9 percent) from the floor and made three treys. The team went 5-for-8 at the free throw line. JBU shot 21-of-61 (34.4 percent) from the field but made five three-pointers and went 9-for-12 at the line.

Patton matched a game-high 16 points and grabbed seven rebounds. Her double-digit point total streak extended to 11 games in a row, as she shot 7-of-14. 10 of her points came in the second half. Dugan followed with the team's other double-digit performance and added four boards, two assists, three steals, and the key block at the end. Johnson led UNTD on the glass and chipped in six points and two blocks.

UNTD was edged 47-39 on the boards. The six blocked shots as a team matched a season-high, with the other against Nelson (12/14/24). John Brown committed 23 turnovers compared to 17 by the Trailblazers. It is the eighth contest an opponent for UNTD has committed at least 20 miscues.

The Trailblazers held a 17-7 advantage on points off turnovers, including 9-0 in the first quarter. Second chance points were nearly even, favoring UNTD 10-9. JBU held an 8-4 edge on fastbreak points and 37-31 edge on points in the paint.

Snodgrass tied the game-high 16 points and had 19 boards, with eight offensive rebounds. Caelyn Ferguson and Graci Harris chipped in 11 and 10 points, respectively.

UNT Dallas returns to Ellis Davis Field House for one game this week before heading out for four-straight away games. The team hosts Mid-America Christian on January 16 and the ball tips at 6:00 p.m.
