UNTD Women's Basketball cannot Overcome the Stars Saturday

OKLAHOMA CITY, Okla. – For consecutive Saturdays, University of North Texas at Dallas women's basketball competed on the road and were a basket away from forcing overtime. Unfortunately, the Trailblazers fell shy on a frustrating afternoon at Abe Lemons Arena to Oklahoma City by a final score of 74-71.

UNT Dallas continues to compete and create chances. The latest was a four-point deficit with under a minute remaining. Senior Skye Dugan (Richardson, Texas) made a layup with 21 seconds left after a steal by classmate ShanDrea Yeldell (Dallas, Texas). The Stars split at the free throw line and Yeldell scored a quick layup to make it a one-point game and seven ticks on the time. OCU made both free throws this time and UNTD had to go the full length of the court with no timeouts. The Trailblazers got an open look from Yeldell as time expired, and her game-tying attempt missed the mark.

The starting five for UNT Dallas nearly all cracked double-digits in scoring, a nine-point first quarter deficit was erased, and a 14-point hole crawled out of. The Trailblazers saw an opponent turn the ball over 26 times, which was one away from the season-high mark and the fourth time in six games since the turn of the calendar to 2025.

The loss is the fifth straight since starting 2025 in the win column and drops the Trailblazers to 4-14 overall and 3-13 in Sooner Athletic Conference play. OCU improved to 8-11 overall and 8-7 in conference. The Stars win the season series.

Dugan tied a game-high 21 points, as she shot 9-of-16 from the field, added five rebounds, four assists, and four steals. It is the fourth time this campaign that Dugan has achieved 20 points or more. She combined for 50 points against the Stars this year.

Patton notched a double-double for consecutive games with 13 points and 12 boards. It is her sixth game to tally at least 12 boards and one off her personal-best. This is her 13th straight double-digit scoring game and ninth double-double. Patton recorded six offensive and defensive rebounds, three assists and steals, which each of the final two categories were season-bests.

Sophomore De'Asia Johnson (Dallas, Texas) claimed 13 points for her highest scoring game of 2025 and first with double figures. It is her seventh game to tally double figures and tied her third-most. Johnson's six steals tie a season-high with the other at Science and Arts (11/26/24).

Yeldell rounds out the quartet of double-digit scorers with 10 points. She dished a season-high six assists and came up with a game-changing steal. Senior Mya Bills (Rockwall, Texas) was the other starter that missed giving the unit five in double figures, as she logged eight points with both Trailblazer's three-pointers in the game.

Behind Patton's 12 boards were a quartet of players grabbing five: Dugan, Yeldell, Bills, and junior Allysa Pendley (Waco, Texas). The 53 rebounds shatter a season-high for the team and are the third time to eclipse the half-century mark. This includes a season-most 24 offensive rebounds and the second time to eclipse 20 this season. It is also seven away from a single-game record that was done last season against Central Christian (2/1/24).

UNT Dallas led in points off turnovers (24-14) including an 11-2 surge in the fourth quarter. The Trailblazers carried a 44-22 edge on points in the paint, which featured double figures across all four quarters. They notched a 20-8 edge on fastbreak points, too.

The Trailblazers easily etched a season-high 19 steals with eight players tallying one. They matched a season-most 30 field goals made and were one shy of attempting their highest amount. The difference came down to the line as UNTD went 9-for-21.

UNTD built an early lead in the game, going up 10-6 through the first three and a half minutes. Dugan had the final four points of that surge, but four players had found the scoring column. The Trailblazers got held to two points the final 6:34 minutes and only had a layup by Johnson with 3:05 left in the quarter. Oklahoma City knotted the score just past five minutes in the frame and took the lead for good a minute later on a fastbreak layup by Victoria Ososonya. Johnson's basket made it 13-12, but eight points in row ballooned the margin to 21-12 through one quarter.

An early run by the Stars in the second quarter pointed to a potentially discouraging afternoon as the host led by as many as 14 following a three by Brooke Curry a little over two minutes in. The Trailblazers evaporated the deficit over the next five minutes with a 13-3 run. Dugan scored six points, while Patton had two baskets in a row. Dugan swiped a steal and would get a three-point play the old fashion way to slice the gap to six (34-28). After a miss by OCU, Dugan scored on a breakaway to make it a four-point difference. The Stars made two three-pointers to push the lead to eight, and Johnson connected two free throws to make it 40-34 at halftime.

UNTD scored four points to open the second half and pull within two points, but OCU answered back to make it a six-point lead again. Down six, the Trailblazers finally closed the gap completely to tie things at 46. Dugan had two free throws and then got a fastbreak layup with four minutes left in the quarter. The Stars closed the quarter with 10-of-12 points to run back out to an eight-point lead at the end of three frames.

The final quarter saw the home team go up 11, but most of the way the score was in single-digits. With about five to play, Patton split at the free throw line, Johnson came up with a steal and found Yeldell for a layup. Two occasions after that Patton put down layups to make it a three-point game. With 2:19 remaining, Bills tickled the twine on a three to put the score at 66-64. OCU almost got it all back with a layup and foul, but the free throw missed. Now under two minutes, Johnson got a free throw to cut the score to 68-65 and the Stars turned the ball over. A layup by Dugan nipped the margin to a point with 1:36 to go. OCU scored three of the next four free throws to go up by four (71-67). The Trailblazers were unable to answer and appeared to be in danger of the game getting away in the last minute. However, OCU turned the ball over with 26 seconds and Yeldell found Dugan on the fastbreak to give breath at the end. OCU had enough success at the line (23-31 overall) in the end to see out the triumph.

Amaya Gordon tied Dugan with a game-high 21 points on OCU's side. Jerzie Bryant followed with 19 points and Taryn Cottrell added 11.

UNT Dallas completes a busy stretch of three games in six days on Monday at Science and Arts at 1:00 p.m.
