UNT Dallas challenges No. 17 Wayland Baptist on Thursday

DALLAS, Texas – University of North Texas at Dallas women's basketball challenged No. 17 Wayland Baptist for most of the game on Thursday night, before eventually dropping a 91-78 result at Ellis Davis Field House.

The Trailblazers led by as many as five points in the first quarter and this game featured nine ties and 11 lead changes. Late in the third, a jumper by senior ShanDrea Yeldell (Dallas, Texas) capped a 27-point period that saw UNTD outdo the nationally ranked opponent and give her team its final lead of the game, 64-63. A trey by Linda Brice flipped the lead the last 20 seconds a last time.

UNTD's senior Eryka Patton (Hutchins, Texas) knotted the game at 66 a final time during the opening 47 seconds of the fourth quarter. Wayland Baptist rattled off an 8-0 run and created separation.

With the gap a nine (77-68) near the midway point of the final quarter, the Trailblazers contended a final time on a jumper by freshman Lauren Pete (Rockwall, Texas) and then an old fashioned three-point play by Patton nipped the deficit to four (77-73) and 4:11 remaining. The margin was never closer, as the Flying Queens outscored UNTD 13-5 the rest of the way.

The Trailblazers never surrendered, swiping steals before scoring their final two layups. Wayland Baptist shot 50.1 percent (31-61) from the field and got away late in an otherwise entertaining and back-and-forth thriller.

Patton led all players with 21 points. She added seven rebounds, two blocks, and four steals. Yeldell dished eight assists with the second highest team total 13 points. Senior Skye Dugan (Richardson, Texas) and sophomore De'Asia Johnson (Dallas, Texas) each tossed in 10 points.

Nine different players scored a point for UNTD and the starting five nearly had double-digits from all with just one point missing from the quintet sweep. The Trailblazers bench also made solid contributions with 15 points coming from that group.

UNTD continues to be nuisance for opponents controlling the ball, as the team forced the Flying Queens into a season-high 24 turnovers. There have been 11 games this season that the opposition has turned the ball over at least 20 times and the 24 total ties the fourth most in a game by the opposition.

The Trailblazers shot 43.8 percent from the field (28-64) and made six three-pointers. They slumped at the free throw line, making 16 out of 27 chances. UNTD held advantages on points off turnovers (34-15) and fastbreak points (11-8). The home team claimed a small advantage on points in the paint, 40-38.

Wayland Baptist won the battle on the glass, 44-30 and led to a 17-7 advantage on second chance points.

Five starters from the Flying Queens eclipsed double-digits in points, led by Kaitlyn Jerden with 20 points. Megan Nestor had a monster double-double with 18 points and 20 rebounds. Peyton North contributed 17 points, while Linda Brice had 14 and Emily Sigala added 11.

The victory secured a spot in the SAC Women's Basketball Tournament for Wayland Baptist, as the team improved to 19-2 overall and 16-2 in league play. UNTD dropped to 6-14 and 5-13.
