Trailblazers clip Eagles to Open 2025 with Victory

DALLAS – It was a complete finish for University of North Texas at Dallas men's basketball, breaking away to a 75-64 win over Southwestern Christian on Saturday afternoon at Ellis Davis Field House. This marked the first win of 2025 and counted as the team's first home Sooner Athletic Conference win. A 40-22 first half gave the Trailblazers plenty of cushion and they enjoyed a double-digit triumph.

They improve to 7-6 overall and 4-6 in conference, while the Eagles dropped to 4-10 overall and 2-9 in conference.

Junior Greg Crawford (Houston, Texas) continued his stardom with another spectacular showing in the box score. He notched his 10th double-double and fifth in a row with game-highs in scoring (22) and rebounding (14). The point total matches a third-highest on the year and his rebounding total was a personal-best. Perhaps more impressive was nine rebounds coming on the offensive side.

UNT Dallas led wire-to-wire in this contest, as a fastbreak layup by junior Daniel Sohn (Aledo, Texas) put the home on the board. He added a free throw for the first three points, and SCU got a tip-in just three minutes into the game to make it a one-point difference. A 15-2 run reflected an awoken offense by the Trailblazers to built an 18-4 advantage through not even seven minutes of the game. Senior Jayden Johnson-Blair (Dallas, Texas) got a layup on the fastbreak and Crawford rattled in the next six points with a trifecta and an old-fashioned three-point play. Sohn added two free throws to pad his strong early start and then a basket by junior DaRyan (Austin, Texas) in his season debut opened a double-digit lead for the first time. A trey by senior Vernon Johnson (DeSoto, Texas) capped the start.

The Eagles responded with a pair of three-pointers to slice the margin to eight points. UNTD countered with 12 of the next 14 points, coming from in the paint. Crawford had consecutive points, while Sohn swiped a steal leading to a layup. Senior Ashton Howard (Cedar Hill, Texas) followed a missed shot with an offensive rebound and putback and added another layup. Johnson capped the run to make it a 30-12 game with four and a half minutes prior to intermission on a fastbreak layup that was created on a steal by Willams and an assist from Johnson-Blair. Also getting involved in the action was sophomore Dante Curry-El (Charlottesville, Va.) making his first points of the season. The margin grew to at least 20 points twice and a late SCU basket would lead to a 40-22 halftime score.

A double-digit halftime lead at home in conference play has not been a sure thing for the Trailblazers, who are 0-3 at Ellis Davis against SAC teams and all game determined by four points or less. The beginning of the second stanza began eerily similar as the Eagles scored eight points in a row in 1:18 minutes to prompt an early UNTD timeout. After trading points, a trey by Rob Gambill of the Eagles cut the margin to single-digits (43-35). It was the only time the gap narrowed to under 10 points once Williams split at the free throw line and then a dunk by Crawford lifted the team up double figures again. Johnson had a layup and an eventual 14-6 run yielded a 57-41 advantage capped on trey by Johnson. The advantage reached 20 points with seven minutes remaining, as Sohn had consecutive baskets and scored five points in a row. UNT Dallas held a double-digit lead until the final horn with a three by the Eagles on the final shot attempt with 16 seconds going in by Taylor Turner to make it the final 11-point difference.

Behind Crawford's performance was Sohn shattering double figures in scoring a third consecutive home contest, which are the only ones to break the double-digit plateau this season. Sohn broke his career-high in scoring set at the last game by three points as he poured in 19 on Saturday. This included 6-of-10 from the floor and 7-for-10 at the free throw line. Johnson-Blair rounded out the trio of double-digit scorers with 10 points and dished eight assists to match his career-high from early in the campaign at home against Oklahoma City. Williams made his Trailblazers' debut and gave a gritty performance from the bench, tallying seven points and rebounds.

The 64 points allowed tied the lowest amount the Trailblazers have surrendered to a conference opponent this season with the other being at Science and Arts. UNT Dallas shot 43.1 percent (28-65) from the field, made four three-pointers, and were 15-for-24 at the free throw line. The Trailblazers held advantages on points off turnovers (23-7), points in the paint (42-34), and fastbreak points (14-6). Each of these categories saw big advantages toward UNTD in the first half. The Trailblazers only turned the ball over 10 times, while SCU committed 20.

The Eagles were led by Wooldridge with 18 points and 11 rebounds for a double-double. Deondre Dunn had 16 points, while Rob Gambill posted 12.

UNT Dallas hosts Texas Wesleyan on Monday at Ellis Davis Field House. Tip-off is around 8:00 p.m. after the women's game.
