Minor wins Local Thriller for Women's Basketball on Wednesday

DALLAS – A go-ahead basket by Kaylyn Minor (Garland, Texas) with a second remaining propelled University of North Texas at Dallas women's basketball to a 74-73 victory at Paul Quinn on Wednesday night. The senior caught a missed shot attempt on the outer edge of the post to the left of the basket. Minor quickly got the potential game winner heaved and a bounce in favor of the away team counted for her 10th points of the second half. This non-conference battle between two campuses separated by 10 minutes ended after a back-and-forth thriller that resulted in 15 lead changes and six ties.

The victory was the first of the season for the Trailblazers (1-1) and first for Head Coach Otis Nicksion under this program. Paul Quinn (3-2) fell for the second time by one possession and worked hard to rally from an early 24-8 deficit.

UNT Dallas began the game with a 2-0 lead on the first basket by Minor, who would not tally another point until the start of the second half and was the hero. The Trailblazers scored 10-of-12 points to start the game and were able to build a double-digit lead early thanks to 12-for-14 shooting at the charity stripe. De'Asia Johnson (Dallas, Texas) and Ke'Liyah Anderson (Dallas, Texas) combined for 17 points with Anderson tallying all 10 points for the contest in this frame.

Up as many as 14 in the second quarter early, the Trailblazers went cold as Paul Quinn delivered its highest scoring period with 28 points and holding UNTD to eight. With three and a half minutes before intermission, the lead flipped on a layup by Nyah Morgan to make it 29-28. Over the next two minutes, the home team kept the momentum by building a 35-28 lead for the Tigers' largest lead of the night. Layups by Johnson and Channing Beauvais (Paradise, Texas) kept the deficit to 36-32.

The third quarter was a fast start for UNTD, as Sanaa Murphy-Showers (Plano, Texas) forced a steal and Minor made an old fashioned three-point play. Johnson flipped the lead by to the guests at 8:37 left in the quarter and a 38-36 UNTD advantage. The Trailblazers built two leads to as high as six (6:35) and seven (5:01) in the stanza. The Tigers battled throughout the remainder of the quarter, as neither side could stride further out. It was the highest scoring quarter for the Trailblazers with 27 points.

The Tigers roared to a narrow advantage in the fourth quarter, but a layup by Johnson at 8:19 turned the lead back to UNTD. ShanDrea Yeldell (Dallas, Texas) grabbed a steal that led to her layup on the breakaway. Paul Quinn countered with a triple to knot the score at 65 with just past six minutes remaining. A scoring drought followed for each team, as Paul Quinn got on top with three and a half minutes left. The sides kept jostling for control as each team gave their all in the possessions ticking toward the final horn. With two minutes left, Murphy-Showers split at the free throw line and after a missed shot by the host would see the ball return to Yeldell for a jumper at 1:40 left. Paul Quinn answered with a shot and then Johnson had a counter with a jump shot and 1:06 remaining. Good defense stymied the Tigers on the final seconds, but a foul allowed for two free throws that were good to make it 73-72. This set the stage for Minor's heroics.

Johnson headlined a quintet of double-digit scorers with a career-high 20 points. She shot 7-of-18 with two three-pointers and a 4-for-4 effort at the free throw line. Johnson added three rebounds and steals. Her durability is also noteworthy, as she is the only Trailblazer to play at least 30 minutes in the Wednesday win with 38.

Minor notched her highest scoring total since her freshman year with 12 points. It tied with Jade Myles (Dallas, Texas) who logged most of those points in the second half and earned a team-leading four steals. Yeldell totaled 10 points, six rebounds, seven assists, and three steals. Allysa Pendley (Waco, Texas) grabbed a team-high seven boards with Minor and Yeldell at six each.

The Trailblazers shot 39.4 percent overall and drilled four trifectas. They produced an astounding 18-for-20 at the charity stripe.

Paul Quinn was led by Canai McPherson with 26 points, while Zaire Brown earned a double-double with 14 points and 11 boards. The Tigers shot 31.1 percent with three three-pointers, and a 24-for-36 at the line.

Each team scored 34 points in the paint, while the Trailblazers scored on two baskets in transition. Paul Quinn won in points off turnovers (24-20) and second chance points (19-11). The Tigers hauled down 52 rebounds compared to 41 by UNTD. The Trailblazers amassed 17 steals with eight players being credited with at least one.

This was also the first win historically for UNT Dallas above Paul Quinn.
