Trailblazers unable to keep up with Eagles

TEXARKANA, Texas – University of North Texas at Dallas men's basketball suffered a 78-62 loss on Thursday night to Texas A&M-Texarkana at the Patterson Student Center. The Trailblazers were unable to keep pace with Texas A&M-Texarkana, who opened a six-point halftime lead and used a 10-point second half swing to pull away and never looked back.

The setback drops the Trailblazers to 3-7 overall and 2-4 in Red River Athletic Conference play. The win was the sixth straight for TAMUT and improved its record to 7-3 and 5-1 in conference.

DaRyan Williams (Austin, Texas) delivered his best road performance to date this season with a double-double of 13 points and 12 rebounds, while adding three assists, two blocks, and two steals. Williams total rebounds match a career-high from earlier this season when he notched that amount against Southwest (11/22/25). That game also resulted in his other double-double obtained with UNT Dallas.

JT Curry (Baton Rouge, La.) claimed a season-high 14 points, shooting 6-of-9 from the field and added two rebounds, an assist, and steal across 23 minutes from the bench. Greg Crawford (Houston, Texas) chipped in 10 points and six boards, too. Crawford has scored double figures in all-but one of his 38 games played with the Trailblazers in his career.

The UNTD bench combined for 35 points.

The Trailblazers shot 40 percent (24-60) from the field and were 3-of-20 from three-point territory. They slumped at the free throw line, going 11-for-24 overall and 1-for-6 in the opening half. They won the scoring battle inside the paint with a 34-26 lead.

Texas A&M-Texarkana did most of its damage at the free throw line with 24-for-30 shooting and included a 16-for-19 second half. The Eagles nailed eight triples on 30 attempts and were 32.4 percent (23-71) from the floor. The Eagles took advantage of UNTD miscues, who committed 20 compared to nine by the home squad. The Eagles held a 20-9 advantage on points off turnovers. The Eagles also edged UNTD, 18-8 on second chance points, as they hauled down 51 total rebounds compared to 45 by the guests.

Leading the Eagles offense was Daryl Houston with a monster double-double 22 points and 15 rebounds to lead all players in both columns. He also swiped five steals. Deovaunta Williams contributed 16 points and seven boards. Daniel Vieira-Tuck tossed in 14 points.

A slow start proved too difficult to overcome for UNT Dallas, as the Eagles raced out to an eight-point lead through just past three minutes powered by consecutive three-point field goals. A layup by Demaryon Thornton (Chicago, Ill.) three and a half minutes into action got the Trailblazers on the board. It was a sluggish start offensively on both sides, as the Trailblazers pulled within four points (10-6) seven and a half minutes into play with a layup by Crawford. The next two minutes saw the Eagles stretch the margin to double-digits (16-6). After a trey by Julius Morris (Houston, Texas) cut the gap to five (16-11) with 10:50 left and had followed on a steal by Thornton and assisted by Williams. Crawford later split at the free throw line making it a four-point score again just beyond the midway point. The Eagles sank a trifecta and an offensive putback by Curry got the score to 19-14 with just under seven minutes before the break. A small push by the home team raised the lead to as many as 11, before UNT Dallas put together its best run of the contest with eight straight points from 3:33 to 2:05 on the clock. Williams had two layups, while Keelan Russell (Dallas, Texas) got involved on a fastbreak basket and Curry capped the run on a jumper. Curry added a tip-in the final seven seconds to make it 29-26, but a late trey by Alex Orr for the Eagles sent them into the locker room up 32-26.

It took a minute and a half to get going again by either side, but the Eagles pulled out to an 11-point edge early on. UNTD worked to keep the score within nine points, but were unable to close the gap the final 14:15 minutes. It was all Eagles, as they went up as many as 22 points in the final five minutes. The Trailblazers' reserves battled with pride to cut the game to 16 as the result.

UNT Dallas heads to Shreveport for the final 2025 game against No. 25 LSU-Shreveport. Tip-off is at 3:00 p.m.
