Trailblazers close Tough Stretch at LSUS

SHREVEPORT, La. – University of North Texas at Dallas women's basketball was edged 87-59 at LSU-Shreveport on Saturday afternoon. After keeping the preseason Red River Athletic Conference favorites held to within eight points through one quarter, the Pilots showed why they are unbeaten in league play and receiving votes in the NAIA poll by edging the Trailblazers by 30 points across the next 20 minutes to control the momentum.

The loss marked a season-long third game for the Trailblazers, who are 4-5 overall and 3-4 in conference play. Their previous three games were to top teams in the RRAC, which included an unbeaten North American and LSUS and one-loss Texas A&M-Texarkana. The Pilots remain unbeaten in conference play at 7-0 and are 12-2 on the year.

De'Asia Johnson (Dallas, Texas) secured her second double-double in the past three games with 13 points and matched a career-high 14 rebounds. She added two steals and a block.

ShanDrea Yeldell (Dallas, Texas) contributed 12 points and swiped five of the team's eight steals. Yeldell scored double-digits for the fourth time this season and first since her statement game at Our lady of the Lake with 30 (12/6/25). The point guard's five steals tied the second most in a game this season, as she has eclipsed three in all-but one appearance.

Channing Beauvais (Paradise, Texas) earned a rare start and rounded out a trio of double-digit scorers with 11 points, which tied a personal-best for the third time this year.

Jade Myles (Dallas, Texas) added nine points.

The Trailblazers shot 30.2 percent (19-63), making six three-pointers, and were 15-for-22 at the free throw line. They grabbed 44 rebounds compared to 41 by the Pilots. They had a 13-9 edge on second chance points.

LSUS was able to earn a 23-7 advantage on points off turnovers. The Trailblazers committed 21 turnovers, but unlike most games where they can keep the margin close or slightly in favor; the Pilots took care of the ball with just 12 turnovers. That's the fewest turnovers committed by an opponent this season and second beneath 20. The next closest was 18 by Xavier La. (12/11/25).

The Pilots shot north of 50 percent through the first three quarters, including 66.7 percent (12-18) in a 30-10 third quarter. They blitzed with 11 three-pointers and were 10-for-15 at the free throw line.

Selma Markisic headlined the LSUS offense with 35 points behind 14-of-21 shooting from the field and 6-of-11 from three-point range. She added four steals to match a team-high. Paula Gonzalez Herrero had 12 points, and Sami Slusarek claimed a double-double with 11 points and 12 rebounds.

LSUS broke out of the gate with the first three points. Myles countered with a trey less than a minute later to knot the game. It was all Pilots beyond that juncture, as they never trailed in the contest. Markisic sent down the go-ahead three to spark a 12-0 run. 10 of the points were scored from 9:02 until 6:23. It was under the midway time of the first quarter that LSUS capped the run by Markisic, who was responsible for seven points in that span.

Ke'Liyah Anderson (Dallas, Texas) ended the drought at 4:45 for the Trailblazers to push the margin back within single digits. It was back-and-forth throughout the remainder of the quarter, as they kept an eight-point difference on the scoreboard. It is the second closest point-spread for a team against the Pilots in a conference game after one quarter. The tightest game was at LSU Alexandria on December 11 (Led by 5 points).

Beauvais sank a trifecta early in the second quarter to slice the gap to seven (26-17).  LSUS responded with 12 straight points and held the Trailblazers without a field goal for over five minutes to go up by 19. With the gap reaching 20 at one moment, Johnson scored four straight UNTD points including a trey in the later part of the quarter to cut the deficit to 15 (44-29). The Pilots carried a 47-29 halftime lead.

It was all LSU-Shreveport in the third quarter, with a 30-10 swing. The home team was 12-of-18 from the field compared to 3-of-16 for UNT Dallas.

The Trailblazers returned the 10-point difference in the second quarter by outscoring LSUS by that amount in the final frame, 20-10. Yeldell notched seven of the team's points in that quarter.

UNT Dallas looks to rest over the holiday break. The Trailblazers continue a three-game road stretch at the start of 2026 with a game at University of the Southwest on January 3. Tip-off is at 1:00 p.m.
