Trailblazers Early Momentum Snuffed by Jaguars 2nd Half Surge

SAN ANTONIO, Texas – University of North Texas at Dallas men's basketball saw a strong start fizzle into the second half, as Texas A&M-San Antonio grabbed an 82-75 victory on Thursday night. The Trailblazers surged to a 13-point lead with under five minutes to play in the opening half, 31-18. The Jaguars closed on an 11-4 run to bridge the gap to six points (35-29) at intermission. A 53-point second half propelled the home team to victory, as UNTD increased its scoring to 40 points in the last 20 minutes, but could not overcome the hot-shooting Jaguars.

The result drops UNT Dallas to 2-4 on the season and 1-1 in RRAC play. TAMUSA moves to 2-6 and 1-1 in RRAC action.

Greg Crawford (Houston, Texas) tied a game-high 22 points and earned his third double-double of the campaign with 10 rebounds. Crawford has eclipsed 20 points in five contests now and was 10-for-13 at the free throw line, which is four games to make double-digits at the charity stripe.

Sedric Curry Jr. (Baton Rouge, La.) registered a double-double with 16 points and 10 rebounds. His scoring output was a season-high as he went 5-of-8 from the floor and 6-for-7 at the free throw line.

Keylyn Sanders (Paris, Texas) gave UNTD a trio of double-digit scorers with 10 points, while DaRyan Williams (Austin, Texas) chipped in nine points and eight boards. Demaryon Thornton (Chicago, Ill.) and Julius Morris (Houston, Texas) each shot 2-of-4 from downtown and tallied eight points.

The Trailblazers won the battle on the boards 47-34, but committed 15 turnovers compared to eight by the Jaguars. The guests were able to earn a 20-6 advantage on second chance points, but were outdone 15-6 on points off turnovers. A&M-San Antonio also ran in the second half with all 21 fastbreak points coming within that stanza. The team was 21-9 against UNTD in that facet.
UNT Dallas shot 39.7 percent from the field and made seven three-pointers. The team went 22-for-29 at the free throw line. The Jaguars shot 43.3 percent overall, but were above 50 percent (16-31) in the second half. The team was not lethal beyond the arc, making just five three-pointers all game. A&M-San Antonio did go 25-for-35 at the free throw line and were 19-for-26 in the final 20 minutes.

Carson Brown matched a game-high in scoring with 22 points. Dezmond Dudley followed right behind with 20 points. Xzavier Brown grabbed 10 boards.

The Trailblazers scored five points out of the gate with a triple by Thornton following two free throws by Curry Jr. Sanders added another triple to extend the reach to 8-3 through the first five minutes. Two minutes later and four more points pushed the advantage to 12-3 on a pair of Crawford free throws and layup by Dante Curry-El (Charlottesville, Va.).

The lead did not grow anymore until later in the half, but the Jaguars offense would not remain stifled either. With 9:19 left, a successful trey by Brown flipped the score to the home side's first lead of the game at 16-14. It also capped a 7-0 run from a minute ago.

UNTD answered with the next seven points that included layups by Curry Jr. to tie and regain the lead. Williams got involved with a string of seven points coming within the next nine by UNTD, which involved a triple to open a 28-18 edge with five and a half minutes before the break. The Trailblazers next three points came from Crawford over the next minute, and they built their largest lead of the game behind a 15-2 scoring swing.

A&M-San Antonio kept swinging away and caught fire out of the break with six points in two minutes to knot the affair at 35. Thornton put UNTD back on top with a trifecta. The sides exchanged baskets, as Sanders and Morris hit key triples past five minutes to fight to keep the Trailblazers ahead.

The tide turned with the Jaguars going up on a three-point play by Felix Grief to make it 48-46 with 11:43 remaining. A&M-San Antonio led the remainder of the game, as an 8-0 run pushed the team to a 52-46 lead. The Trailblazers fought to keep within striking distance, but never pulled closer to six the remaining 8:44 of the game. They did make it a two possession game on five occasions until the final horn.

After the spread reached double figures and as many as 12 points (65-53) with five minutes, the Trailblazers put together a last push to get within six over the next three minutes. Crawford was doing his part at the free throw line to shrink the deficit with no time elapsing, and Morris had his other trey happen with a minute and a half left to cut the deficit to 72-66. A&M-San Antonio made the next 10 free throws to put the game away. Curry Jr. had a three-point play and a fastbreak layup after a Crawford steal to keep the game interesting, but it was ultimately a second half comeback for the Jaguars.

UNT Dallas remains in San Antonio for a second
RRAC contest on Saturday at Our Lady of the Lake University.
