UNTD Women's Basketball allows Big 3rd to put No. 19 Langston in Front

LANGSTON, Okla. – University of North Texas at Dallas women's basketball dropped Thursday's game to No. 19 Langston, 71-57. The Trailblazers outscored the nationally ranked opponent in the second and fourth quarters by three points but were downed by a combined 20 points in the first and third to separate the teams.

Langston moved to 22-1 overall and 18-1 in the Sooner Athletic Conference as the Lions maintained first place. UNT Dallas fell to 7-15 overall and 6-14 in conference play.

After allowing four points to start the contest, senior ShanDrea Yeldell (Dallas, Texas) scored the next four points to level the score. Just past the midway point of the first quarter, sophomore De'Asia Johnson (Dallas, Texas) scored a basket to keep the deficit at two points (10-8). The Lions closed the quarter on an 8-2 scoring span that included eight straight points. The Trailblazers were without a field goal the final 4:44 minutes of the frame and tallied two free throws by sophomore Sanaa Murphy-Showers (Dallas, Texas) the final 19 seconds to end the scoreless stretch for the guests.

In the second quarter, the Trailblazers battled to maintain a similar deficit and began cutting into the gap inch-by-inch. Four minutes into the second, a trey by Johnson sliced the deficit to 20-19. A steal and made basket by senior Mya Bills (Rockwall, Texas) pushed UNTD ahead of the top 25 team for the first time on the night and first time in a game this season. Langston answered with a triple by Mikayla Woods and Yeldell had a three on the next play to equalize the one-point difference on both sides.

Unfortunately, it was the only juncture in the game UNTD held a lead, as Jordynn Conner put the Lions up 25-24 and UNTD would split at the free throw line with senior Eryka Patton (Hutchins, Texas) hitting the first-of-two. Langston broke a 25-all game and scored seven of the next 10 points. UNTD had a trey by senior Skye Dugan (Richardson, Texas) to nip the deficit to a point, again (29-28). Langston scored a two and another pair of free throws for a 32-28 halftime score.

The third quarter proved to be too difficult for the Trailblazers to overcome as the deficit never shrank below four points. The Lions roared out to an advantage as great as 18 (50-32) and used a 20-8 margin to push the edge.

Five points in a row from Bills started the fourth quarter and a basket by Patton less than two and a half minutes into the frame cut the deficit to 12 points (55-43) and breath life into UNTD. It was the biggest push the Trailblazers got in the quarter and highest scoring quarter of the game with 21 points. This play highlighted the team's fight to compete regardless of the score and who the opponent is. Langston never allowed to yield a deficit closer than 12 points the rest of the game, but the Trailblazers gave their second top 25 team in the NAIA and league competitive games from the opening tip.

Patton was the only UNTD player to eclipse double figures in scoring with 11 points. She grabbed a team-high six rebounds. Dugan, Yeldell, and Johnson formed a trio that scored nine points apiece. Dugan swiped three steals and dished four assists. Bills added seven points.

Nine of the team's 11 players scored at least two points from a made basket.

The team struggled shooting from the floor on the night with a 38.5 percent clip. A 2-for-16 shooting result in the third quarter did not help matters. UNTD was effective at the free throw line, 12-for-16. The second quarter was good for the Trailblazers, as the team made five threes and had a trio during this 10-minute period.

Langston outrebounded UNTD 39-26. Both teams turned the ball over 21 times. This continues a streak of the Trailblazers not loosing the ball more times than their opposition in a game since Nelson on December 14 in 2024. This is the first time both teams had the same number of turnovers in a game, but the streak remains intact at 11 games since 2025 began.

Langston was led in scoring by Conner and Nykale Cramer with 12 points each. Mattie Boyd chipped in 11 points, while Mikayla Woods had 10 points and matched a team-high eight boards.

The team shot 42.9 percent from the floor and shot 20-for-23 at the free throw line. The team only made three trifectas.

UNT Dallas looks to bounce back with a conference game at Central Christian on Saturday at 2:00 p.m.
