Game Recap: Women's Basketball | | nathanyacovissi

Win Streak Snapped at 4; Women's Basketball unable to comeback twice on LA Trip

ALEXANDRIA, La. – For the second straight game on this road trip to Louisiana, University of North Texas at Dallas attempted fighting from behind 30 minutes and rallying in the fourth quarter for a late lead. However, Louisiana State University of Alexandria answered with key baskets and handed the Trailblazers their first loss of 2026 with a 71-68 win at the Fort on Saturday.

After a close first half that saw UNTD behind a few points, the Generals seemed to be in position to escape late in the third quarter with a lead as large as 15 points (53-38). With 4:25 left, the Trailblazers pulled within eight points over the next three minutes after a layup by ShanDrea Yeldell (Dallas, Texas) to make it 56-48. Two LSUA free throws made it a 10-point spread and a minute to go. This score took the teams into the fourth quarter.

A three-pointer by Jade Myles (Dallas, Texas) with 2:18 minutes remaining in regulation propelled the Trailblazers to their first lead since it was 12-11 with 1:28 left in the opening frame. The Generals knotted the score at 65 with two minutes left at the free throw line. De'Asia Johnson (Dallas, Texas) buried the go-ahead trey, but the home team stole the momentum with a pair of swipes that led to a go-ahead layup by Reese Stephens with 1:10 left. UNTD couldn't answer on two attempts to go back on top and Sydney Person hit the final basket to secure a 71-68 final. The Trailblazers had the ball with 18 seconds left but made a costly turnover and could not get a foul to extend the game.

The setback ends a season-long four-game winning streak that started 2026. This marks the second longest positive streak since the program won six games to begin 2021-22 and was the first year in the NAIA and Sooner Athletic Conference. The four-game streak against Red River Athletic Conference teams does mark a conference-long winning streak.

UNT Dallas sits at 8-6 overall and 7-5 in the league. LSUA improves to 6-10 and 5-6 in conference.

Yeldell scored a team-high 17 points, while making three trifectas and swiping three steals. Myles followed with 14 points and had a team-high five steals. She was 3-of-6 from downtown. Ke'Liyah Anderson (Dallas, Texas) registered her second straight double-digit scoring total for the road trip with 10 points and had two steals. Johnson watched a five-game streak of being a UNTD leading scorer elapsed but had a clutch three that was part of her nine points. She matched Kayden Riley (Dallas, Texas) with eight game-high boards. Johnson swiped three steals, as UNTD totaled 14.

A quartet of Trailblazers distributed the ball for 15 assists with Yeldell, Myles, and Johnson tallying four apiece. Lauren Pete (Rockwall, Texas) dished the remaining three.

UNT Dallas shot 40 percent (28-70) from the field with seven three-pointers. The Trailblazers made the most of their free throw chances with five-of-six.

LSUA posted a 45 percent (27-60) mark from the floor with three trifectas and came through 14-for-20 at the free throw line.

Stephens had a game-high 19 points thanks to 8-of-12 shooting and swiped seven steals. Person and Kelly Norris each sank 16 points in the win.

The Trailblazers entered the day holding a 20-net positive advantage on opponents for the year on total rebounds. LSUA won the battle on the boards, 40-31, but it was the sixth time this season that an opponent achieved the feat.

LSUA outdid the Trailblazers on points off turnovers (28-16) second chance points (13-2), and points in the paint (34-22).

The Trailblazers turned the ball over 24 times, while they continued to create havoc on the opposition with 29 turnovers by the Generals.
It was another sloppy start to the game for UNT Dallas. Both sides battled to gather footing through the midway point of the quarter with nine points combined. A steal and layup by Johnson flipped the Trailblazers in front for the first time in the game just under five left. A three-point play the old-fashioned way changed the lead again, and a trifecta by Yeldell flipped it back a point (9-8) towards UNTD. Anderson grabbed a steal and Allysa Pendley (Waco, Texas) scored on a jumper assisted by Pete for a 11-8 swing. LSUA handled the last six points in a minute and a half to close with a 15-12 lead that ended up the difference later.

It was an even second quarter with both teams scoring a game-high 22 points for the quarter. The Trailblazers pulled within a point twice during the stanza with a layup by Johnson the first 11 seconds being once, and later at 2:27 a layup by Sanaa Murphy-Showers (Plano, Texas) closing the gap to 30-29 being the other. After an LSUA answer with a basket, Yeldell had a tying triple with 1:13 left. Five of the next seven points went LSUA's way to keep a three-point lead into halftime, 37-34.

Throughout the contest, UNT Dallas never trailed by more than five points until early in the third quarter. Anderson tied the score at 38 first, but a 15-0 explosion sent the Generals to a 53-38 lead with 4:25 left. A steal by Norris led to a successful layup and the harm sent her to the line for an old-fashioned three-point play that began shifting the tide for points five through seven in that surge. Two field goals by Person and McKayla Price accounted for the last eight points.

The final three minutes saw the Trailblazers dig deep to work the deficit to eight points. A steal by Pete led to an eventual triple by Myles with two and a half minutes. It broke a cold spell from 8:40 to 3:10 without points. Myles continued her slumpbuster with a trey that shrank the gap to 10 (53-43). LSUA dropped three more points and Yeldell chimed with an answer to maintain the 10-point gap. Yeldell got another score to get within eight points, but the Generals ended with a double-digit lead.

While it was not the same quick turnaround out of the gate on Thursday at Louisiana Christian, the Trailblazers battled back never trailing by more than 10 and held a seven-point edge for the fourth. Eight straight points started the run with jumpers by Yeldell, Pete, and Johnson. A layup with 4:17 left by Riley narrowed the gap to 62-60. Channing Beauvais scored a layup to make it 63-62 and three to go. Myles got the clutch three, while Johnson followed up with her first and only of the outing. It was not to be though, as LSUA picked up enough defensive stops to prevent further UNT Dallas scoring and had the points to steal the result.

UNT Dallas is back at Trinity Leadership Public School Thursday and Saturday for rematches against Our Lady of the Lake University (January 22 at 5:30 p.m.) and Texas A&M-San Antonio (Jan. 24 at 1:00 p.m.).
