Trailblazers Suffer Tough Loss to OLLU

CEDAR HILL, Texas – A promising start quickly evaporated and University of North Texas at Dallas women's basketball was caught short in a close battle with Our Lady of the Lake University with a 53-51 result at Trinity Leadership on Thursday night.

The Trailblazers came out strong and led by 10 after 10 minutes but were cold in the next 20 minutes with 11 combined points. The Saints won the game with a go-ahead three-pointer by Samantha Fields with 25 seconds left. De'Asia Johnson (Dallas, Texas) lined up a three-pointer with time expiring at the top of the arc but saw the ball rim-out to deny a dramatic walk-off.

It was a stunning loss for the Trailblazers, who dropped a second straight game after winning four in a row to begin 2026. They fell to 8-7 overall and 7-6 in the Red River Athletic Conference. OLLU improves to 5-14 overall and 4-9 in conference.

Johnson led all players with 17 points, shooting 7-of-13 from the field and made two three-pointers. ShanDrea Yeldell (Dallas, Texas) chipped in 14 points with 5-of-9 shooting and also had a pair of triples. The leading scoring tandem also led a feisty defensive effort with six steals each.

Allysa Pendley (Waco, Texas) grabbed seven rebounds to lead the team, while Jade Myles (Dallas, Texas) added seven points and five boards.

UNT Dallas shot 34.5 percent from the field overall, making nine of its 20 field goals in the first quarter. The team also nailed four of its six three-pointers for the contest in the opening 10 minutes. Altogether, the Trailblazers were 5-for-10 at the free throw line with five misses coming down the crucial stretch in the fourth.

The team snatched 21 steals, tying the second most this season with its other mark being against Jarvis Christian at home (1/10/26). The Trailblazers have eclipsed 20 steals in four of the past five games.
The Trailblazers got OLLU to commit 30 turnovers in the game but were also plagued by 28 of their own. The Saints held a 10-6 edge on second chance points and 32-20 edge on points in the paint. UNTD earned a 20-16 advantage on points off turnovers and 8-4 on fastbreak points.

The Saints shot 38.6 percent (22-57) from the field, with four three-pointers, and 5-for-7 at the free throw line. They won the rebounding battle, 41-35, led by Alexandra Westerdijk Martin with 11.

Fields notched a team-high 13 points thanks to her winning shot, while Macie Moss tossed in 10 to go with seven boards.

It was a good start for the Trailblazers, scoring eight points and holding OLLU scoreless through 4:35 minutes. Johnson had the first two field goals, Kaylyn Minor (Garland, Texas) made a pair of free throws, and Myles swiped a steal and went coast-to-coast for a layup. After the Saints found the bottom of the net, Johnson drilled a trey and Yeldell had a jumper to give the home team the first double-digit lead and the greatest margin of the game (13-2). The Saints closed the gap to four points with 2:11 left (16-12), but eight of the last 10 points went down for the Trailblazers, including three-pointers by Yeldell and Johnson to cap a 24-14 lead. A trifecta by Ke'Liyah Anderson (Dallas, Texas) had the Trailblazers connect on a trio of three-pointers for their final four field goals.

Suddenly, Trailblazers offense froze like the anticipated winter weather coming through the metroplex in the upcoming days, as they were scoreless for six minutes. The Saints scored seven points to narrow the deficit, as Myles ended the tough stretch for UNTD with a layup. Moss buried a three and two more baskets sent the road squad on top for the first time in the contest. Yeldell countered with a trifecta for the team's only points of the quarter, but OLLU went up 30-29 in the final two minutes and that score held with only two combined field goal attempts by each side that was plagued by giving the ball away.

The tundra landscape continued for the UNT Dallas' offense with another frigid start to a period. Johnson grabbed an offensive rebound and put in a layup with 6:08 left in the quarter to get on the board. OLLU had not pulled away much either with the deficit at one possession. It was not for a lack of opportunities, as the Trailblazers snatched four steals in the opening five minutes, but only Johnson's second chance opportunity led to any points. The Saints stretched the lead to seven (38-31) with 4:38 left. Over a minute later, the Trailblazers scored four points in 15 seconds as Lauren Pete (Dallas, Texas) scored after an offensive board and Yeldell forced a steal and quick layup. The consecutive baskets made it a three-point game, but the Saints tallied the last three points to end the frame up 41-35. UNTD was scoreless in the last three minutes and neither team scored after 2:10.

The Trailblazers put together their first positive scoring quarter since the opening 10 minutes with a 16-12 edge in the fourth. Myles and Pendley started the offense with back-to-back layups in the fourth through 1:20. Sanaa Murphy-Showers (Plano, Texas) split at the line to close the score to a point (41-40). OLLU answered with a three by Shayla Dede to maintain a lead for the guests. It remained a slim margin until 3:38 remained and Murphy-Showers dropped a triple to make it a 48-47 deficit. Myles knotted the score with the first-of-two free throws, and Yeldell had a quick layup at 2:47 for the first lead chance since late in the first half.

The Saints evened the score at 50 with two and a half minutes left. Johnson picked up a huge steal and would get to the line after drawing a foul. She was good for the front-end of two, but OLLU made a game-changing play with a Dede blocked shot on the next Trailblazers layup attempt. Fields dropped the critical three-point basket from the right side to flip the score. With 25 seconds left, the Trailblazers dribbled until seven seconds remained and called another timeout for a new look. Johnson was able to get the desired look straight away from the basket, but her three-point attempt rolled in-and-out leaving the Trailblazers frustrated by the outcome.

UNT Dallas will regroup next week for a road trip to North American (Jan. 29 at 5:30 p.m.) and Xavier (La.) (Jan. 31 at 1:00 p.m.).
