Johnson's 1st Half Surge; Team's 12 Triples not Enough against Stallions

STAFFORD, Texas – A back-and-forth contest resulted in North American University getting a final boost in the second half to defeat University of North Texas at Dallas women's basketball on Thursday night. The Trailblazers pulled ahead with a game-high 27 points in the second quarter to lead by six at the break (45-39). After both sides traded runs to gain slight leads in the third and fourth quarters, the Stallions overall product of work led them to victory.
 
De'Asia Johnson (Dallas, Texas) registered her fifth double-double of the season with 26 points and 13 rebounds to lead the Trailblazers. However, NAU made an adjustment at halftime, holding Johnson to four points in the last 20 minutes.
 
The Stallions earned the season sweep over UNT Dallas with both contests back-and-forth contests in each one. The setback is the third in a row for the Trailblazers, matching a season-long and places them at .500 with a 8-8 record and 7-7 RRAC record. NAU improves to 11-6 and 9-6 in the conference.
 
Jade Myles (Dallas, Texas) followed Johnson's team-high in scoring with 17 points. She drilled four three-pointers, dished two assists, and swiped four steals to tie a team-high.
 
Channing Beauvais (Paradise, Texas) rounded out the trio of double-digit scorers with 10 points and grabbed six boards. She joined Johnson with a pair of blocks by each player.
 
ShanDrea Yeldell (Dallas, Texas) contributed across multiple statistical categories for the Trailblazers, as she posted eight points, six rebounds, eight assists (tied a career-high), and four steals. Yeldell also dished eight dimes a year ago versus Wayland Baptist University.
 
Kayden Riley (Dallas, Texas) notched a personal-best three steals, as the team combined for 12 with the trio mentioned above combining for 11.

 

The Trailblazers shot 39.1 percent (27-69) from the floor but were a scorching hot with 12 made three-pointers for a season-best. It was one shy of tying the single-game record, which was last season at Nelson (1/25/25). They went 10-for-15 at the free throw line.
 
The Trailblazers were edged by 10 on the glass (46-36), dished 19 assists, and turned the ball over 20 times.
 
North American held advantages in the majority of categories that included: points off turnovers (18-16), second chance points (30-21), and points in paint (44-28). The Stallions shot 42.7 percent overall with eight trifectas. They went 13-for-18 at the charity stripe.
 
Savannah Velazquez erupted for a game-high 32 points, going 12-of-18 from the floor, making three treys, and shooting perfect at the free throw line with five makes. She was one rebound off a team-high and had eight to go with four assists and three steals. Lauren Vela contributed 13 points and a team-leading nine boards. Aliyah Solis also cracked double-digits with 12 points and matched a game-high eight assists with UNTD's Yeldell. As a team, the Stallions distributed 24 assists with a quartet amassing at least four and combining for 21.
 
The Trailblazers jumped out to a 7-2 advantage from the gate with Myles getting the first basket and Johnson following with a layup and three-pointer. A trio of steals within this span also helped the visitors look to push a high tempo game. Around four minutes into action, the Stallions sliced a five-point gap into a six-point lead with triple three-pointers by Velazquez (2) and Solis. UNTD ended the 11-0 run with a three-pointer of its own by Beauvais to make the score 15-12 with 3:49 left in the opening quarter. NAU went up as many as seven points over the next two minutes (21-14), but the Trailblazers cut into the gap with jumpers by Johnson and Ke'Liyah Anderson (Dallas, Texas) to end the frame down 21-18.
 
Down seven early in the next quarter, the Trailblazers turned the tide at the moment with a layup by Beauvais and a tip-in on an offensive rebound from Yeldell. Just past three minutes into the quarter, Sanaa Murphy-Showers buried a trey to cut the deficit to 29-27. A Johnson put-back and triple by Myles were impactful scores changing the lead during a 10-1 Trailblazer scoring swing to make it 34-30 and just past the midway juncture. The Stallions battled back to knot the score a few times and UNTD maintained a slight edge until around a minute and a half remained before intermission. Johnson was successful on consecutive three-pointers in 10 seconds thanks to an NAU turnover giving the visitors the ball quickly in that span. It opened an eight-point edge with 1:08 left, but the Stallions got a last-second jumper by Vela to head into halftime down 45-39.
 
Johnson was on fire in the opening stanza, tallying 22 points and nine boards to nearly secure her double-double.
 
Murphy-Showers connected on her other field goal from three to give her six points in the box score. It opened the largest lead of the game for the Trailblazers a minute and a half into the third quarter with a 48-39 lead. Two three-pointers by the Stallions bookend an 8-1 run that nipped the margin to a pair of points (49-47). UNT Dallas continued to fight holding onto a narrow lead, but Solis made the go-ahead three at 3:32 for a one-point lead (53-52). The Stallions pushed out to a multi-possession lead on nine straight points. Lauren Pete (Rockwall, Texas) snapped the run with a layup with a minute left and Myles nailed a three with five seconds left after a theft from Yeldell to close the quarter down 59-57.
 
Johnson's lone field goal of the second half started the Trailblazers fourth quarter with a one-point lead on the first play. It was the final time the guests gained a lead, as the Stallions answered with the next four points. Beauvais made layups to keep the score within a point. Her five points of the quarter came in a row, as she split at the free throw line and would keep UNTD within a basket through 3:45 minutes into the quarter. Neither side found the bottom of the net for almost two minutes, as NAU and UNTD traded baskets with under five minutes to go. Two free throws and an offensive rebound that was tipped back in opened a 73-67 edge for the Stallions three minutes from Beauvais' last free throw. Myles banged a much-needed trey and Riley scored a layup after picking up a steal to pull within a point (73-72) with 3:12 remaining.
 
The next two minutes won the game for NAU with an 8-0 run that was headlined by a three-pointer by Maurdaisha Powell. Myles scored the final four points for the Trailblazers with rare four-point play as she made a three with 1:06 left and added a free throw. That reduced the deficit to 81-75, but the Stallions put the game away with four free throws in all attempts.
 
UNT Dallas heads to New Orleans on its longest multi-city road trip of the season with Xavier (La.) on Saturday. Tip-off is scheduled for 1:00 p.m.
