Strong Season Performances not Enough as Trailblazers fall to Nelson

DALLAS, Texas – University of North Texas at Dallas fell 73-65 to Nelson on Saturday afternoon at Ellis Davis Field House. The Trailblazers (3-8, 2-7 SAC) were unable to maintain a strong first quarter that saw them score a season-high 27 points in a quarter. Nelson (4-8, 3-6 SAC) erased a nine-point gap in the second quarter to even the score at halftime and would pull away in the fourth to secure the conference win.

Senior Skye Dugan (Richardson, Texas) tallied a game-high 23 points and registered her first career double-double with 10 rebounds. Dugan set a personal-best on the glass and the 23 points were her third highest scoring performance on the campaign. It is her second-highest scoring performance in a conference game.

The Lions built a quick 8-2 lead before UNTD responded the with a trey by Johnson and jumper by Patton. Johnson tied the game at nine with 6:13 left and Dugan drilled a three to give her team its first lead of the day and capped a 10-0 run. Dugan added a trio of treys during a 15-7 scoring span in the final 3:52 minutes of the first. Her final triple opened the largest advantage of the contest at nine (25-16) for the first time with 1:14 left. A basket by freshman Ke'Liyah Anderson (Dallas, Texas) ended the quarter with a 27-18 edge for the Trailblazers.

Nine quick points with three trifectas helped narrow the margin to two points (29-27) in the first minute and a half of the second quarter. A layup by junior Kaylyn Minor (Garland, Texas) and Patton kept the gap at four points and a trey by senior Mya Bills (Rockwall, Texas) maintained the lead for the Trailblazers until six straight points by the Lions flipped the score late in the period. Dugan split at the free throw line late in the game to send the teams into the break with the score tied at 39.

Nelson never trailed the rest of the game, as Kate Miller scored a triple and added a layup for the first five points of the second half. The Trailblazers battled to keep the game within a possession throughout the third. A 5-0 spurt that included a three-point play by Johnson and a tying layup by Bills led to the final time the scoreboard was deadlocked at 48 with 4:10 left. The Lions scored seven of the next 12 points to end the quarter with a 55-52 lead.

A layup by Johnson cut the deficit to a point to open the fourth, but the Lions rattled the next seven points to grab an eight-point lead (62-54) with 7:33 left in the game.
