UNT Dallas blitz Eagles in 4th Quarter to Start 2025 with a Win

DALLAS – New Year's had University of North Texas at Dallas women's basketball rejuvenated and some added depth helped the team capture its first victory at Ellis Davis Field House and start 2025 in the win column after dismantling Southwestern Christian, 80-70, on Saturday afternoon. The game featured both sides gaining double-digit leads at various point of the game, but a 31-18 fourth quarter that had a 16-0 difference on fastbreak points headline a faster and more aggressive style of play from the Trailblazers, who improved to 4-8 overall and 3-7 in conference play.

Senior Eryka Patton (Hutchins, Texas) led all players with 21 points and claimed her fifth double-double on the season with 13 rebounds, which tied a season-high. Patton went 9-of-19 from the field, hit her first three-pointer of the campaign, and added a pair of assists and a steal to her standout day.

Teammate Sky Dugan (Richardson, Texas) followed with 18 points, with the majority coming from the free throw line behind an 11-for-14 effort. She neared a double-double with nine boards and matched a season-high six assists.

UNT Dallas' top scoring tandem received a boost from two new names, as senior ShanDrea Yeldell (Dallas, Texas) contributed 13 points, six rebounds, four assists, and four steals in her first game back. Yeldell played with the Trailblazers during the program's inaugural 2020-21 season. She last played in 2022-23 at Cedar Valley College, where she collected NJCAA Third Team All-American, Dallas Athletic Conference Newcomer of the Year and was First Team All-Conference. Returns for her senior year and was impactful off the bench immediately.

Another contributor from the bench was freshman Ke'Liyah Anderson (Dallas, Texas) with a personal-best 13 points. Anderson was effective in 12 minutes, making all six field goal attempts and one free throw. She nearly doubled her season total output, but it was her 11 fourth quarter points that sparked the team to a 13-point advantage in the frame and gave the team a season-most 80 points in the win. The 31 points in a quarter were the most scored by UNTD in a single period this season. That surpassed the previous home game against Nelson, which was a 27-point first quarter.

In the opening quarter, neither side generated much offense, as eventually would build a 14-5 edge with 1:20 left before the first break. A three-point play by Dugan and a triple from senior Mya Bills (Rockwall, Texas) sparked UNTD's offense and sliced the gap to five. A free throw by Dugan in the last 11 seconds capped a 16-12 deficit to SCU.

The Trailblazers fell behind seven in the first minute of the second quarter, but the next eight points went their way to give them the first lead since being up 3-2. Consecutive trifectas by Dugan and Yeldell flipped the score. Yeldell had a layup and then a tip-in by Dugan opened the lead to 24-19 with 3:46 remaining until intermission. The Trailblazers orchestrated a 19-0 scoring swing that pushed them up by as many as 12 points. Patton started the surge with an inside basket and later found five points in a row with a trey and layup after she swiped a steal to make it a double-digit spread (29-19) for the first time for the home team. Two free throws by Dugan capped the run.

Southwestern Christian had the first three points in about a minute to start the stanza, but went cold until free throws came at 2:36 remaining. Two triples by the Eagles in under a minute would be the first made field goals for the team since the other made basket came on a tip 42 seconds in. The team was otherwise 7-for-8 at the charity stripe, and the late baskets helped send the teams into halftime with a two-point difference. UNTD led 33-31.

The Eagles grabbed the momentum in the third quarter, as they regained an early lead with the first five points. Sophomore De'Asia Johnson (Dallas, Texas) scored the next four points to have sides trade leads. Patton pushed the margin to three points, which was the greatest lead for the Trailblazers in the third. Southwestern Christian rallied most of the quarter to eventually gain a 50-39 advantage with 2:37 left. Making matters more difficult was after that make, Dugan exited the game due to an injury. She later returned in the fourth but not until the Trailblazers had rallied back. Anderson made a jumper at 1:24, as UNTD closed the third on an 8-2 run. Eight points in row went to the Trailblazers, as a pair of free throws in the last 11 seconds were all SCU garnered to protect a slim lead (52-49). Bills had two baskets, which included steal leading to the final once which had made it a one-point score (50-49) before the final free throws.

UNT Dallas clamped down in the fourth quarter, scoring eight points thanks to a couple of fastbreak jumpers by Anderson and a steal that went enroute to a layup on the break away by Yeldell. SCU got its first points of the frame three and a half minutes in and were at the free throw line. A three-point play the old-fashioned way that was handled by Anderson just beyond the midway juncture of the game opened an eight-point lead for the first time of the quarter by UNTD. The home team never yielded a smaller lead than six the rest of the way. The spread reached 11 points on a jumper on the fastbreak by Andrson with 1:38 left. The Trailblazers shot 68.8 percent from the field in the fourth quarter going 11-of-16.
