Trailblazers unable to Close Gap on Texas Wesleyan

DALLAS – University of North Texas at Dallas women's basketball worked hard overcoming a big first half deficit to stay within reach of single-digits but could not narrow the gap enough in an 82-70 setback to Texas Wesleyan on Monday at Ellis Davis Field House. The Rams outscored UNTD in three-of-four quarters with the first quarter being a 27-13 margin that was too steep of a hill to climb.

Senior Eryka Patton (Hutchins, Texas) led all players with a career-high 27 points and tied a game-high 10 rebounds. Patton shot 12-of-20 from the field and secured her sixth double-double overall and second in a row to start out 2025. Patton also had two assists, a block, and a steal. Patton's previous scoring high came against the Rams in Fort Worth with 26 points.

UNT Dallas drops to 4-9 overall and 3-8 in Sooner Athletic Conference play. Texas Wesleyan improves to 10-5 and 6-5 in the conference.

Texas Wesleyan came out shooting hot going 50 percent from the field and three-point territory with 8-of-16 and 4-of-8. The Rams put together a 27-13 first quarter advantage. Senior Skye Dugan (Richardson, Texas) netted half of her 12 points in the opening quarter with two three-pointers in as many attempts. Her first triple got the Trailblazers on the board and a layup by sophomore De'Asia Johnson (Dallas, Texas) put them up 5-4. Around the midway point of the first, Dugan's other three broke an 8-all score and a jumper on the break by Johnson made it 13-10. The Rams closed the quarter out with 17 straight points.

In the second frame, the lead for the Rams ballooned to 18 points on a few occasions. UNTD rallied under the five-minute mark with eight points in a row. Patton had a layup and freshman Ke'Liyah Anderson (Dallas, Texas) completed a three-point play. Senior Mya Bills (Rockwall, Texas) capped the mini run with a trifecta. A basket by the Rams broke up the streak, but eight more points reflected a 16-2 scoring span favoring UNT Dallas and shrinking the gap to four points (41-37) with 1:19 before halftime. Patton was responsible for eight points. Texas Wesleyan countered with six points to go up 47-37 at the break.

The second half saw the two sides play nearly even throughout the 20 minutes. The Rams outscored UNT Dallas by a point in the third and fourth quarters to seal the win. The Trailblazers pulled within seven points in the third and eight in the fourth, but never any closer. By the contrary, Texas Wesleyan never led by more than 12. Both teams struggled shooting from the floor in the fourth quarter, as Texas Wesleyan cooled down to 18.2 percent (2-11) and UNTD went 26.7 percent (4-15).

The Rams had shot over 50 percent during the first 30 minutes and finished at 45.6 percent overall. They shot 24-for-32 at the free throw line.

UNT Dallas shot 41.5 percent from the field and were at or above 50 percent in the second and third quarters. They made seven three-pointers and shot 9-for-20 at the line. The made three-pointers matched a season-high as a team for the third time with each coming at Ellis Davis Field House.

Beyond Patton's strong game, was Dugan eclipsing double-digits in points with 12. She shot 3-of-5 from downtown, dished four assists, and swiped three steals. Johnson had nine points and senior ShanDrea Yeldell (Dallas, Texas) posted eight points, three rebounds, three assists, and two steals. Bills added seven points with a pair of treys.

The Trailblazers held advantages in points off turnovers (32-18), which included never being outdone in any quarter. They scored 22 points in the first half off miscues. They held advantages in the following categories: second chance points (12-6), bench points (14-10), points in paint (38-34), and fastbreak points (18-11).

UNTD did commit fewer turnovers with 16, while Texas Wesleyan turned the ball over 21 times. UNTD swiped 13 steals as a team, which is the sixth game the team has reached double-digits in the column.

The Rams did hold a 47-30 edge on the boards. They were led offensively by a quintet of players in double figures. Imani Mitchell and Kameryn Phillips matched team-highs in points with 18. Mitchell was 4-of-5 from three and Phillips scored 12 points at the charity stripe. Savanna Smith chipped in 15 points, while Tayran Wills notched a double-double with 11 points and 10 boards. Sophia Hurtado scored 10 points to give the starting five for the Rams the double-digit scoring plateau.
