Opening and Closing Quarters too much for UNTD Women's Basketball to Overcome against Bobcats

POINT LOOKOUT, Mo. – The first and last quarters were too wide of a gap for University of North Texas at Dallas women's basketball to contain College of the Ozarks in a 79-64 setback on Thursday night. The Trailblazers trailed by seven after one period but would outdo the Bobcats by five combined points over the next 20 minutes. A 31-18 fourth quarter pushed the home team out for good.

The Trailblazers fell to 4-11 overall and 3-10 in Sooner Athletic Conference play. College of the Ozarks improved to 10-6 overall and 8-4 in conference.

Leading the Trailblazers in points was a trio that came from the starting lineup. This was headlined by the team's season top scoring tandem Skye Dugan (Richardson, Texas) and Eryka Patton (Hutchins, Texas) by doing the heavy lifting with 14 points each. Dugan increased her team-lead and continues to pace near the top of the conference leaderboard in steals with six, which tied a season-high. The other instance was against Oklahoma City (11/16/25). Patton led the team in made field goals with seven and added four rebounds and a steal. Rounding out the trio in double figures was senior ShanDrea Yeldell with 11. She had four boards and assists.

For the second game in a row this week, Dugan got the Trailblazers on the board with a trey to start their scoring. This time it gave the visitors a 3-2 lead a minute into action. Things looked good early as patience by Patton and Dugan led to some effective baskets and grab a 7-3 advantage. It was short-lived, as the Bobcats rattled off 13 straight points to grab the lead for good and go up nine (16-7) with under two minutes before the first break. An old fashioned three-point play by junior Allysa Pendley (Waco, Texas) cut the gap to six and a split at the free throw line completed the scoring of the quarter with a 17-10 edge for the Bobcats.

The Trailblazers continued battling and saw some good fortune in the second quarter, as Patton scored the first two layups and had six of the team's first nine points to help knot the score at 19 with five and a half minutes prior to halftime. The Bobcats had a layup for their only field goal two minutes into the stanza, as UNTD held firm. A trey by sophomore De'Asia Johnson (Dallas, Texas) answered that basket to make it a two-point score. College of the Ozarks never trailed, as it scored seven of the next eight points. A trey by senior Mya Bills (Rockwall, Texas) answered a seven-point margin to make it a four-point game with 3:29 left. UNTD battled until halftime, as Bills had the final jumper with 15 seconds left to make it 31-27. The four-point spread was as close UNTD was after the tie.

The Bobcats pushed to a double-digit lead in the third quarter. A strong closing run lifted UNTD up 19-17 in the quarter alone. It was also the highest scoring quarter of this game on the visitor's side. Down nine points (48-39), Patton had a layup to spark the late run with 1:53 before the fourth. Five made free throws by Johnson, Yeldell, and Pendley closed the gap to 48-46 at the end of the frame.

Dugan had an early trifecta to keep the deficit at two points (51-49) to start the last quarter. A dry-spell over the next minute was over as the Bobcats replenished the gap with a trio of three-pointers. A trey by Bills at 5:45 left in the game brought the deficit to 62-58 with under six minutes to play. A 15-5 run was the final scoring string after that timestamp and the Bobcats sealed the victory.

In addition to the top scoring trio, Pendley netted a season-high nine points in her third contest back. She was 3-of-3 from the floor. Penley added five rebounds. Bills had eight points thanks to a pair of treys and added six boards. Johnson tallied seven points and boards.

UNTD shot 31.9 percent from the field and 5-of-16 from downtown. The Trailblazers went 13-for-23 at the charity stripe. This game saw the team give up a season-low nine turnovers, while the Bobcats doubled that amount. Despite the numbers, the Bobcats earned a 9-7 advantage on points off turnovers. The Trailblazers held a 14-11 edge on second chance points, while College of the Ozarks led 14-12 on points in the paint. The Trailblazers bench outdid the Bobcats 18-5.

College of the Ozarks shot 49.1 percent from the field and 9-of-11 in the fourth quarter. The Bobcats hit 4-of-6 alone from three in the fourth and made six total. The team was 21-for-32 at the free throw line.

Susanna Moran and Taylor Rush eclipsed 20 points with Moran leading with an 8-of-11 and 11-for-19 at the firee throw line. She tallied 27 points and 19 rebounds. She added three steals. Rush had 20 points, while Logan Jones followed with 18.
