Trailblazers hit Record Number of 3's; Johnson buries the biggest for a 1-Point Win at Nelson

WAXAHACHIE, Texas – A record-setting game behind the three-point line highlighted a one-point victory, 78-77, over Nelson on Saturday afternoon at Sheaffer Center. The Trailblazers broke their single-game team record for made three-point field goals with 13 and the biggest came on the last triple from sophomore De'Asia Johnson (Dallas, Texas) to propel the visitors on top with less than 10 seconds.

Once at a deadlock, 75-all, and no shot clock; the Lions from Nelson got a layup by Autumn Moore with 18 seconds to play. UNT Dallas called timeout and were able to find Johnson in the far-left corner and she tickled the twine with a clutch shot that marked her fourth made three-point field goal on five attempts in the game.

With nine seconds left and ahead a point, the Trailblazers fought for the stop and got it after two chances were missed and freshman Ke'Liyah Anderson (Dallas, Texas) secured the winning rebound.

Senior Eryka Patton (Hutchins, Texas) registered her ninth double-double as she led the team with 18 points and 10 rebounds. She has three double-doubles in the past four games. Patton swiped a personal-best five steals, along with classmate ShanDrea Yeldell (Dallas, Texas) to lead to the majority of the team's 13 steals. Yeldell (career-high 8) and Dugan (7) combined for 15 of the team's season-high 19 assists.

Johnson had the heroic shot and accounted for 16 points. Senior Skye Dugan (Dallas, Texas) and Yeldell tossed in 13 points each.

The UNTD women's basketball program previously achieved the highest made three-pointers with 11 on two different occasions. The most recent game this occurred was on December 9, 2023 against Central Christian, while the first time was on December 1, 2022 with Texas Wesleyan.

The win pushes the Trailblazers to 6-13 overall and 5-12 in Sooner Athletic Conference play. Nelson falls to 5-15 and 4-13 overall. It marks a season split between two teams that entered tied in the standings. UNTD secured consecutive wins for the first time since defeating John Brown and Southwestern Assemblies of God (now Nelson) in December of 2022.

The Trailblazers got off to a hot start by building a 16-3 advantage through the midway point of the opening quarter. Johnson started the game with a quick two points and senior Mya Bills (Rockwall, Texas) drained the first trey of what would be an impressive day.

Bills was coming off an individual record-setting day from the team's win at Science and Arts on Monday with a 7-of-10 effort from three to tie the single-game record for players. Her hot shooting touch spread to the rest of the team on Saturday as multiple players dazzled from long range.

After a two by Nelson got the team on the board at 8:40, the Trailblazers scored five straight points and then with an opponent free throw would tack on six more points to cap the hot start. Yeldrea had a fastbreak three and Dugan brought the margin to double figures for the first time with a trifecta of her own. Yeldell capped the run with a layup on the breakaway.

Nelson was held without a field goal for over five minutes, as free throws had the team working on closing the gap. The home team did get on a run of its own to counter UNTD with a 12-0 surge to nip the margin to a point (16-15) and a minute and a half left. The Lions took the lead on a trey by Ashley Gonzalez for their first lead of the game with about 30 seconds remaining, but a layup by Patton in the final six seconds pushed the Trailblazers up 19-18 after one.

In the second quarter, it was back-and-forth throughout the first part of it, as the Trailblazers answered a tied 19 game with the next three points. A trey by the Lions' Paris Miller knotted the score again at 7:38, but UNTD had an answer from deep by freshman Lauren Pete (Rockwall, Texas). Sides traded points, as Nelson had a small burst to claim a three-point lead (30-27) around the midway point. Dugan tied the game with a trey and followed with a steal to generate a fastbreak layup and put the Trailblazers in front the remainder of the half. Three-pointers by senior Madison Davis (Mansfield, Texas) and Anderson highlighted a 13-2 scoring span that lifted the Trailblazers to a 40-32 halftime lead. Dugan tallied all her second quarter seven points during that run, which included 10 unanswered points for UNTD.

Nelson outscored the Trailblazers in the second half, as the guests fought to protect the lead. They were successful in the third quarter by not trailing a single time. The Trailblazers struck a 10-point gap on a layup by Yeldell about two minutes in to make it 46-36. After four Nelson points, Johnson drilled a trey with five and a half to go in the third. The Lions rattled off eight straight points to slash the gap to one over the next three minutes. Dugan found a trey to stop the run and UNTD scored nine of the final 14 points to contain a 58-53 lead at the end of three. Patton scored the final four points.

UNT Dallas continued to forge ahead in the fourth quarter, never trailing and going up as many as eight points (73-65) with just under five to go. The Trailblazers went cold for over two minutes without any points and seven in a row brought the home team within one after a three by Wendy Clemmons made it 73-72 to cap that streak. Johnson answered with a jumper at 2:06 to stop the surge. Johnson scored over half the team's points in the fourth with 11 total and was 4-of-6 from the field and 3-of-4 from three.

The past two weeks on Saturday road games have resulted in heartbreak losses with a two-point final at John Brown and three-point final at Oklahoma City. Even with five ties and six lead changes, the Trailblazers were looking to not end on the wrong side again. Clemmons tied things at 75 with 49 seconds left and UNTD missed on the next possession, giving Nelson the ball and a chance to lead. Moore scored with 18 ticks on the time, which had the makings of another narrow defeat. Both previous mentioned games did have UNTD in a position to tie the score and force overtime, but field goal attempts were off line in each contest.

This time Johnson made the shot, already having made more three-pointers in a game with three and this was the biggest one for the Trailblazers this season. Nelson still had time to answer and grab the triumph, but a missed three and second-chance opportunity were missed, and the Trailblazers got the possession. With 0.3 ticks left, UNTD inbounded successfully and celebrated a thrilling victory down the highway.

UNTD eclipsed double-digits in made three-pointers for the first time this season and set a season-high on consecutive victories this week, having made nine on Monday. The team shot 35.9 percent from the field (28-78) and were 9-for-14 at the free throw line. The Trailblazers grabbed more offensive rebounds than defensive (16-15) for 31 total. They swiped 13 steals, which gives the team double-digits in that category a sixth time in the past eight games and 10th time overall.

UNTD held a 16-7 edge on points off turnovers, which was largely due to Nelson committing 21 and UNTD only losing the ball a season-low eight times. The Trailblazers also held small leads in second chance points (9-6) and fastbreak points (19-16).

All 10 participating players for the Trailblazers tallied a point and seven players made a three-pointer.

Nelson dominated in the paint, 50-24 and shot a good percentage from the field at a 51.8-clip (29-56). The Lions made four three-pointers and were 15-for-21 at the line. Paris Miller led the team with 18 points and Moore had 10 to help the bench garner 44 points. McMinn tossed in 11 points.

UNT Dallas returns to Ellis Davis Field House for two games upcoming on January 30 versus Wayland Baptist at 6:00 p.m. and February 1 versus Oklahoma Panhandle State at 2:00 p.m.
