Trailblazers edged by SCU on Saturday

EL RENO, Okla. – University of North Texas at Dallas women's basketball was defeated 77-70 to Southwestern Christian University on Saturday afternoon at Redlands Community College. The contest was played at that site, since SCU's gym floor was flooded earlier this season and forced all home games at the off-campus site.

A 12-point second quarter favoring the Eagles proved to be the difference in this game, as UNTD outscored its opponent by five points across the remaining 30 minutes. This included a 27-21 fourth quarter that saw the Trailblazers trying to nip the deficit.

Senior ShanDrea Yeldell (Dallas, Texas) led all scorers with 18 points, shooting 50 percent (7-14) from the field and behind the three-point arc (3-6). Her total points these past two road games is 39, as she tallied a personal-best last week at Central Christian. Yeldell notched a career-high seven steals and dished six assists, both for team-bests.

Classmates Eryka Patton (Hutchins, Texas) and Skye Dugan (Richardson, Texas) also had high scoring games with 17 and 15 points, respectively. The duo led the team with seven rebounds and three steals a piece. Dugan supplied four assists, while Patton gave three dimes for a personal-high.

Yeldell anchored a team that continues to show its presence on swiping steals, as her career-high contributed to nearly half of the team's 18 total. This is the third highest for the team in a game this season, with each coming since the start of 2025. Patton, Dugan, and sophomore De'Asia Johnson (Dallas, Texas) each picked up a trio in the column. The Trailblazers also forced SCU into 23 turnovers, which becomes the 15th game to eclipse 20 on the season. It is the sixth highest total and third occasion for 23.

The Trailblazes fall to 8-16 overall and 7-15 in the Sooner Athletic Conference. Southwestern Christian improves to 9-16 overall and 8-14 in conference play. The team's split the season series with the home team winning each time.

Teams equaled made field goals with 28 and made three-pointers with seven. SCU shot 14-for-18 at the free throw line, while the Trailblazers were 7-for-13 and proved to be the difference in seven points.

Another impactful difference in the game was rebounding, as the Eagles came up with 58 total and 17 offensive rebounds. The Trailblazers secured 36 and were edged 14-4 on second chance points.

After allowing four points to begin the game, the Trailblazers got going two minutes in on a pair of free throws by Patton that had followed her snatching a steal. Consecutive treys by Yeldell a few plays later supplied UNTD its first lead of the game. A two-minute drought from both sides occurred as Patton ended the scoring woes with an inside basket at 4:56. Freshman Ke'Liyah Anderson (Dallas, Texas) and senior Mya Bills (Rockwall, Texas) scored the next five points to stretch the road teams advantage to their highest of the game by nine points (15-6). That was at two and a half minutes left in the first quarter, and that juncture on until the final horn was all Eagles, as they scored 10 straight points to lead 16-15 after a quarter.

The lid was on tight for the Trailblazers at the start of the second quarter, too. They last had a field goal, which was a triple by Bills at 2:33 in the opening frame; would get on the board with a three by Dugan three minutes into the second. This scoreless span allowed a 16-0 run for SCU. For the next two minutes, UNT Dallas kept the score within striking distance as three points by Yeldell and Dugan reflected a 25-21 score. The four minutes of the opening stanza belonged to the Eagles, with a 10-3 surge closing the book. A two by sophomore Sanaa Murphy-Showers (Dallas, Texas) with 25 seconds made it a 39-26 halftime score.

That was the contest, as the teams played even in the third quarter with 17 points from each side. It was a balanced attack as the Eagles kept a double-digit lead through the duration of the third and led by as many as 18 (51-33) with 5:17 left in the period. UNT Dallas cut the margin to 11 with 35 seconds left after one-of-two free throws by Dugan capped a scoring stretch of 8-of-9 points.

The final quarter was the highest scoring and biggest margin favoring the Trailblazers. The gap was reduced to single digits twice, the first with just over six minutes on a Patton two that made it 63-55. SCU scored four points and then Anderson had a breakaway two and Yeldell with three and a half minutes picked up a steal and drilled a trey to pull within seven points (67-60). Another two by Anderson slashed the deficit to five and concluded a 7-0 run. Dugan had a fastbreak basket just under a minute to make it a two-possession game, but the Eagles answered with an offensive rebound that led to a second chance score and after not countering with points the Trailblazers had to foul. SCU went 4-for-4 at the line to secure the win.

UNT Dallas held a 22-12 advantage on points off turnovers, including 9-2 in the first and 8-3 in the fourth. The Eagles outscored UNTD 42-38 on points in the paint, while they were edged 12-10 on fastbreak points.

Chrissen Harland and Kennedy Allison posted double-doubles with 17 points each. Allison led the team with 13 boards, and Harland added 11. Brooke Roberson tallied 16 points with three made triples. Jayden Mason had 11 points to give a quartet of starters double-digit numbers.

UNT Dallas plays its final week of the regular season with two games at Ellis Davis Field House. The Trailblazers host College of the Ozarks on Thursday, February 20, at 6:00 p.m. They follow with Senior Day on Saturday, Feb. 22, at 2:00 p.m.
