Inside the Sooner: Ryleah Fisher enjoying the Journey as a Trailblazer

3/12/2025 10:00:00 AM

DALLAS – Ryleah Fisher arrived at University of North Texas at Dallas with her feet grounded and ready to progress with huge steps. She has taken full advantage of every aspect the institution offers to grow herself presently as a student leader and long term in her career. Fisher is studying Criminal Justice and is a first-generation college student. She is deeply rooted with UNTD opportunities, both academic and leadership roles. Fisher is a member of Sigma Gamma Rho sorority, the ASL Club, the Blazers Dance Team, Black Student Union, and has been on the SGA board. Additionally, Fisher is a three-year student-athlete with the track and field team and competed this past fall with the cross country team.

The Denton, Texas, native also utilized the curriculum at UNT Dallas to complete a pair of internships that have significantly shaped her career path. The first was Parole TDCJ, where she gained firsthand experience in offender supervision and rehabilitation process. The second was with DART Police, where she learned about law enforcement operations, public safety, and investigative techniques. Both experiences reinforced her passion for the criminal justice system and helped her develop valuable skills that will be essential in her future career.

Fisher got involved in multiple organizations and has explored many aspects the campus offers over three years. The sorority Sigma Gamma Rho has been an incredible experience, providing a strong sisterhood and opportunities to serve the community while developing leadership and professional skills. She also enjoyed her leadership with SGA, where she had the opportunity to make a real impact on student life and policies at the university. Fisher always is on the move, performing with the Blazerettes at UNTD Basketball games, leading events on campus, practicing and competing at athletic events, or completing lengthy internships that will support her future. Balancing academics, athletics, internships, and extracurricular commitments taught Fisher resilience, discipline, and the importance of building a strong network.

Fisher has been on the UNT Dallas Athletic Director's list three times since it was introduced the fall 2023 semester. Fisher has boasted at least a 3.0 GPA each term this has been implemented and also was recognized as an NAIA Scholar-Athlete last year. Fisher also gained a gold medal in the hammer throw at the 2023 Sooner Athletic Conference Track & Field Outdoor Championships. Fisher won with a 36.66 meter throw (120' 3") at the event, becoming the first Trailblazer to accomplish a SAC individual championship and earn First Team All-Conference. Fisher believes that is one of her greatest memories at UNTD, because it was a moment that reflected all the hard work and dedication she put into her sport.

Fisher chose UNT Dallas because of its strong Criminal Justice program, the sense of community and the many opportunities for student engagement and leadership. The university has provided her with the resources and support to grow personally and professionally. Fisher credits amazing mentors who have guided her along the way.

Fisher was able to be honored on "Senior Day" with the UNT Dallas basketball players last month. It created a full circle moment as all graduating Trailblazers were recognized at the same time. While her classmates wore their jerseys, Fisher was able to represent as a dancer, where she showed out with her squad during two stellar halftime shows. Fisher also had her involvement listed for the audience so she could feel part of the big day.

Fisher advices any current and future Trailblazers to take advantage of every opportunity that comes your way. Get involved, build connections, and don't be afraid to step into leadership roles. Time management is key, especially if juggling academics, sports, internships, and extracurricular activities. Fisher emphasized to "Enjoy the journey – these years go by fast and the experiences you gain will shape your future in ways you never expected." A quote this incredible Trailblazer referenced was "The lesson is that you can still make mistakes and be forgiven." (Robert Downey Jr.)
