Oklahoma City-The Sooner Athletic Conference held its men's and women's conference Cross Country Championships in Bethany, Oklahoma on November 4, 2023. 17 total teams were in Bethany looking to run their best times vying for not only a conference championship, but a chance to qualify for the NAIA national meet in Vancouver, Washington later in November. On the women's side, 8 conference teams ran a 6k, as Vera Eckenroth of John Brown University posted a conference best time of 22:18.80 with an average mile time of 5:58.9. The Texas Wesleyan University Rams took first place overall with an average time of 23.46. This first place finish automatically qualifies them for the national meet.
Desiree Sheffield of UNT Dallas posted a team best time of 35:13. The freshman from Gainesville High School has been a bright spot for the Trailblazers this season and will also compete in sprints for both the indoor and the outdoor track and field seasons.
In the men's 8k race, The Oklahoma City University Stars finished first as a team as well as the male individual. The Stars won with an average team time of 25.44 and Ayenew Devany of OCU finished with a time of 25:18.50, averaging 5:05.5 per mile. UNT Dallas finished 8th overall in the SAC XC Championship with
Devin Page leading the team runners with a time of 31:40.10 and an average mile time of 6:22.3. Page, a Desoto High School graduate, lead the Trailblazers in times this season. He will continue to run mid-distances during both the indoor and outdoor track seasons.
The SAC Cross Country Championships concludes the Trailblazers' seasons and will transition to indoor track and field. Their first meet will be in early December.
