Patton and Dugan Lead Trailblazers in Close Win to Finish Season

DALLAS – Seniors Sky Dugan (Richardson, Texas) and Eryka Patton (Hutchins, Texas) capped incredible seasons in their first years with University of North Texas at Dallas women's basketball, as the pair ended their careers with standout games to lead their team past John Brown, 74-71, on Monday at Ellis Davis Field House.

Similar to these team's earlier meeting that resulted in a two-point difference, the game went wire-to-wire and featured 10 lead changes and seven ties. After an even first quarter, the Trailblazers held a slight advantage through quarters two and three. They built their largest lead of the game at nine with about two minutes left in the fourth quarter, and held on as the Golden Eagles attempted a comeback.

Dugan and Patton led the team in scoring most games this season and held the highest scoring averages, eclipsed that tonight, by making several impact plays on both sides of the ball and scoring when needing a basket.

Dugan recorded her second double-double of the season and scored half of her 20 points in the final stanza. It was her fifth game to eclipse 20 points this campaign. The guard hauled down a career-best 11 rebounds and dished seven assists for the third time this year, all coming since January 25 at Nelson to span eight contests. Dugan led the team with four steals to cap her Sooner Athletic Conference lead in that column. She finishes the season with program records on steals (80), free throws made (105), and assists (104).

Patton paced the team with 22 points to end her Trailblazers' career. She grabbed seven rebounds, with four offensive rebounds. Patton added two blocks and three steals, as the top scoring tandem combined for seven of the team's 11 thefts. The Trailblazers posted double-digits in steals during 16 games this season and finish with four in a row and eight of the last 10.

The team concludes the season with a 9-17 overall record and 8-16 SAC mark. The tied Nelson in the standings for 10th after being selected 11th in the preseason poll. This improves the program from last season's 5-17 record in both overall and league. This is the third straight season the team has ended the regular season with a triumph.

John Brown falls to 13-15 overall and 11-13 in conference play to claim the No. 7 seed in the SAC Tournament. The Golden Eagles will play No. 18 Wayland Baptist in the quarterfinals.

It was a back-and-forth start to the game in the opening quarter. A layup by sophomore De'Asia Johnson (Dallas, Texas) and one-of-two free throws by Patton gave UNTD a 7-4 lead through two minutes out of the gate. A 7-0 run by the Golden Eagles flipped the lead again and made it a four-point advantage, their largest of the game, just over five minutes gone by. After Patton leveled the score at the line with three and a half minutes left, JBU got a three from Briley Burns. With a minute left, the Golden Eagles split at the line by leading scorer Sarah Snodgrass to make it 15-13, and Dugan capped the scoring on a layup the next play to end things tied.

Snodgrass was the player to watch this game with an astounding 36 points and 15 rebounds for a double-double. She was held to three points in the first quarter but got going in the second with 11 points.

The Trailblazers gained a slight lead through the first moments of the next period, but two layups in a row pushed John Brown ahead by four to match its largest lead. After a basket by junior Allysa Pendley (Waco, Texas), the Golden Eagles went back up four. Senior Mya Bills (Rockwall, Texas) connected from downtown and sparked a seven-point streak that featured an energized freshman Ke'Liyah Anderson (Dallas, Texas) demonstrating grit on both sides of the ball. A steal allowed her to get the go-ahead layup with under five to play and then raced out for a fastbreak that Dugan rebounded and assisted to her to make it 28-25. The Trailblazers led the remainder of the quarter, as another trey by Bills and three-point play the old fashion way by Pendley swung the pendulum by six points and opened a seven-point gap, the largest by either side thus far. John Brown closed the quarter with seven straight points, capped by a three-point play by Snodgrass a the end of the half.

The third quarter saw these scrappy teams exchanging small leads until the final four minutes of play. Two free throws by Dugan started a seven-point surge as she added another basket and freshman Lauren Pete (Rockwall, Texas) scored a point and Patton followed a steal with a breakaway layup to make it 51-43 and two minutes remaining in the quarter. JBU got four points to slice the deficit in half and Patton capped the quarter with a layup to give the Trailblazers a six-point cushion. It was the widest scoring margin of any quarter that game with UNTD having a 17-13 edge.

The final quarter ended up being the highest scoring quarter for the Golden Eagles and the Trailblazers matched their highest total for the second. Snodgrass was responsible for 14 points, as she started the scoring in the fourth with a triple and later used a steal and layup to turn the lead back in their favor. Dugan answered with a trey of her own and had two layups to give her a six-point streak alone and push UNTD up by that many (60-54) and only three minutes passed. Patton got involved next with two layups, as the lead stretched to eight over the next minute. The Golden Eagles got a three by Snodgrass and two free throws by Erin Merkel to make it a three-point deficit (64-61). They did not come any closer but matched the three-point difference three more times following.

With two and a half minutes remaining, Dugan scored a layup, got a free throw after a JBU technical and Patton added a free throw on two tries to extend the lead to seven with 2:20 remaining. Senior Shandrea Yeldell (Dallas, Texas) made a jumper to give the Trailblazers their largest lead of the game (72-63). JBU went on an 8-2 run to close the game. With under 30 seconds left and a one possession game (72-69), the Golden Eagles pressed looking for the steal. Johnson made a crucial layup with 12 seconds left. JBU made two free throws on its end and could not get the ball back as time expired.

Johnson chipped in a double-digit performance with 12 points, while Bills had eight. She was three made treys away from tying the single-season record.

The team shot 46.3 percent from the floor, making a season-high 31 field goals. That surpassed the previous high by one and was done three other times. The Trailblazers made three treys and were 9-for-14 at the line. They tied their third highest total in a game for assists with 18, and won the battle on the boards, 37-36. John Brown turned the ball over 20 times and UNTD gave away 18 turnovers. The Trailblazers held a 28-21 edge in points off turnovers and 16-13 edge in fastbreak points. The Trailblazers dominated points in the paint by 20 with a 54-34 advantage. This included 30-16 in the second half.

John Brown led second chance points 14-12. The team shot 43.1 percent (25-58) from the field and made five three-pointers. The Golden Eagles were 16-for-17 at the line.

UNT Dallas women's basketball was led by interim head coach Shelia Davis and assistant coach Otis Nicksion. Several accomplishments for players headline the season, as well as the team battling through adversity and competing until the final whistle.
